Lazio 1-0 Sampdoria: Super-Sub Kozak Launches Aquile Back Into Second

A Libor Kozak header proved enough for the Aquile who moved back into second with a precious win...

Lazio regained second place following a hard-fought late victory over Sampdoria at the Stadio Olimpico.

The visitors started brightly and had the better of the Aquile early on who were far too lethargic in the middle of the park. Chances were few and far between in the opening period but the chance of the half fell to Hernanes who went close to scoring with a well taken free kick.

In the second period the Biancocelesti picked up the pace but were unable to find much joy in front of goal. Seven minutes from time the Aquile broke the deadlock and once again thanked youngster Libor Kozak for a late winner. The Czech hitman popped up in the box to head home once again proving decisive from the bench.

The victory was Lazio’s first of 2011 and lifted the Biancocelesti back to joint second in the standings with high flying Napoli.

The game started brightly with the visitors taking the early initiative going forward. As the Blucerchiati got men in numbers forward the Biancocelesti struggled to clear their lines to the fury of coach Edoardo Reja.

As they found their feet Lazio worked open the first scoring chance when Mauro Zarate cut back generously to Cristian Ledesma on the edge of the box. The midfielder struck the ball with a good connection but could only fire his effort wide of the post.

With little pace in the middle of the park both sides had few chances in front of goal as they cancelled each other out at the back. Hernanes tested Gianluca Curci with a well struck free kick on the stroke of halftime, but the Doriani glovesman did well to hold the shot and protect his clean sheet.

Lazio looked far more determined after the break and the coach’s words clearly had an effect on the side as they attacked with pace down the flanks.

Sampdoria had a golden chance to take the lead on 50 minutes when Angelo Palombo’s pinpoint pass found Giampaolo Pazzini inside the box. The hitman made a great volleyed contact with the ball but surprisingly sprayed over just yards from goal.

Zarate gave the visitors a scare shortly after the hour mark when he skipped past two markers to open up space for a shot. The hitman struck venomously towards the near post but his conclusion ended up just wide to the relief of a stranded Curci.

The Aquile finally broke the deadlock on 83 minutes when substitute Kozak stuck his head on the end of a Ledesma free kick to knock the ball past a helpless Curci. The giant hitman then ripped his shirt of in delight as he lapped up the ovation of the Curva Nord.
