Scotland 2-1 Liechtenstein: Stephen McManus Heads In 97th-Minute Winner

Kenny Miller also scores to save the day for Scotland manager Craig Levein...

By Grant Wilson

Stephen McManus scored a precious winner in the seventh minute of injury time as Scotland squeezed past minnows Liechtenstein 2-1 on Tuesday.

Manager Craig Levein made three changes from the team that drew with Lithuania on Friday evening with Lee Wallace coming in for the injured Steven Whittaker at left-back. Kris Boyd and James McFadden gave the team a greater attacking threat with Barry Robson and Steven Naismith dropping to the bench, and it was just enough to provide victory for the home side.

As predicted, the home side started the game on the offensive and had their first meaningful chance within ten minutes. A free-kick on the right was taken by James McFadden and it was met by Lee McCulloch but his header flew over the bar.

Scotland continued to press and Boyd had a half chance but his shot went well wide, and as the half progressed, Liechtenstein began to frustrate the home side, defending in numbers and willing to commit fouls to stop the home attacks.

However just before the half hour mark, Scotland did break through the Liechtenstein defence. The hard-working Miller skipped past two players on the right and his cross found his ex-Rangers team mate Boyd, who headed just wide.

Although Scotland were the better team throughout the first half, they rarely threatened to the frustration of the home fans and Liechtenstein’s game plan was going to plan. They even had a chance to score just before half time but Sandro Weiser’s shot was straight at Scots keeper Allan McGregor and both teams went into the break level.

However within a minute of the restart, Liechtenstein went one better, striker Mario Frick curling the ball past McGregor into the net from the edge of the box, to give the minnows a shock one goal lead.

And five minutes later it got worse for Scotland as Lee Wallace, making his international debut, was stretchered off after a reckless challenge by Michael Stocklasa.

Going behind seemed to rejuvenate the home side and they began to look threatening with Darren Fletcher, earning his 50th cap, seeing his volley tipped over the bar by Liechtenstein goalkeeper Peter Jehl.

And just a few minutes later Scotland finally made their possession count and were back level. Substitute Barry Robson crossed from the left and a poor clearance found its way to Miller, who unleashed a left foot volley that flew into the net, marking his first international goal in over two years.

With the scores level, the Scots grew in confidence but couldn’t find the goal to sink the team that sat 100 places below them in the Fifa world rankings, although some of the Liechtenstein players were lucky to remain on the pitch, with tought challenges that left some of the home players relieved they didn't pick up serious injuries.

However in the seventh minute of injury time, Scotland scored the winner with literally the last kick of the game. A corner on the right was met by defender Stephen McManus and he headed the ball into the net giving the home side all three points. And with the Czech Republic losing against Lithuania, it capped a fantastic night for Craig Levein's men.
