Italy 5-0 Faroe Islands: Cassano Screamer Powers Azzurri Past Overmatched Visitors

Italy run out 5-0 winners as they dominated a poor Faroe Islands side...

Cesare Prandelli's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign continued in perfect fashion as Italy dominated an average Faroe Islands team. Goals from Alberto Gilardino, Daniele De Rossi, Fabio Quagliarella, Andrea Pirlo and a screamer from Antonio Cassano gave the home side all three points in their Group C match.

Returning to Florence for the first time since leaving Fiorentina, the Azzurri coach was given a rapturous welcome at the Stadio Franchi and made five changes from the first game against Estonia.

The home side meant business right from kick off and even a fan running onto the pitch couldn't break Italy's concentration as they powered on, but maybe the kiss he landed on Antonio Cassano inspired the Sampdoria striker as he was the main protagonist for Italy's attack.

He created a wonderful opportunity for Riccardo Montolivo as he chipped a ball over the Faroe defence to allow Montolivo into the box but the midfielder's cross from a narrow angle was cut out by Gunnar Nielsen in the Faroe goal.

Italy were dominant, retaining possession with ease and pinning their opponents into their own half, with Andrea Pirlo feeding a hungry Cassano at every opportunity. The AC Milan man set up Italy's first as his corner was nodded in by Gilardino to give the Italians the lead.

The goals started to flow, next up was De Rossi who was picked out by a Luca Antonelli cut back though he needed two bites at the cherry as his first attempt was side footed straight into Atli Gregersen.

However, the focus of Italy's attack and the main creative power got his dues only minutes later as Cassano unleashed a wicked shot that bent into the far corner. It was well deserved and it wrapped up the three points for Italy who took their foot off the gas a little.

The Faroe Islands though outclassed did not let their heads drop and did see the Italian goal a few times before the break mainly through Simun Samuelsen but as you would expect the forwards were starved of the ball and support.

After the break it was more of the same as Cassano teased the Faroe defenders before setting up Montolivo whose shot was rifled into the packed box but Cassano retained the ball and his deep cross was sent wide from a Gilardino overhead kick.

The pace was slower in the second half as Italy sat on the lead but substitutes Giampaolo Pazzini and Fabio Quagliarella were both eager to get on the score sheet, and it was the Juventus frontman who managed to hit the back of the net after good work from Montolivo and a nice touch by Pazzini. Pirlo then added a fifth late on with a wonderful free-kick.

Italy will be happy with the result but face tougher matches away to Northern Ireland on October 8th and a home game against Serbia on the 12th, while the Faroe Islands face Slovenia away and Northern Ireland at home on the same dates as Euro 2012 qualification continues.
