Germany cruised to a 6-1 victory over Azerbaijan in tonight's Euro 2012 qualifier, but suffered a setback as Per Mertesacker was forced to withdraw early in the game. Azerbaijan held their hosts to just one goal through 44 minutes, but after Heiko Westermann's opener, Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose added quick-fire goals that effectively finished off the game before half-time.

In the second half, Vagif Dzhavadov netted for the visitors, while Germany benefited from an own goal by Rashad Sadygov, and late strikes from Klose and Holger Badstuber.

Germany started the game in good form, but within five minutes, Mertesacker was forced off after taking an elbow to the face from Dzhavadov, who managed to escape a booking. After extensive attacking play from the hosts, Westermann was denied by goalkeeper Kamran Agayev before firing in from his own rebound.

Klose and Podolski looked bright and each came close to scoring, but had to wait until the final moments of the first half to open their respective scoring accounts. Podolski and Mesut Oezil played four passes between themselves before the Koeln forward netted, and after an exquisite through ball from Holger Badstuber, Podolski set up Klose for Germany's third goal.

In the second half, Rashad Sadygov knocked in Sami Khedira's cross for an own goal, and the rout was on. Shortly after the fourth goal, Dzhavadov's shot was deflected just wide of the post, and from the resulting corner, the attacker was accredited a goal after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer appeared to punch the ball off his back.

The final half hour was played out much like an exhibition as Germany were careful not to be caught out at the back, but were not particularly sharp in attack as Azerbaijan grew tired. Four minutes from full time, Badstuber emphatically headed in his first international goal from a corner, and Klose added a late sixth to round off a comfortable win for the hosts.

Their convincing victory maintains Germany's perfect record in Euro 2012 qualifiers, placing them ahead of Turkey on goal difference. Azerbaijan are last in the group for the moment, but have a game in hand.
