    Logan Bailly

Denied Mueller early, and later made a spectacular save from the German attacker while at full extenuation. Cannot be blamed for Klose's goal.

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

The Arsenal centre half did not appear out of position at left fullback, and added solidity at both ends of the pitch. Occasionally struggled with Mueller and Oezil, but Generally held down his side well.

  • Vincent Kompany

    Vincent Kompany

Made a few clumsy challenges early and was deservedly booked. Calmed down later and kept Klose silent up front.

  • Daniel Van Buyten

Daniel Van Buyten Flop of the Match

Had a decent performance overall, but made a terribly clumsy error that led to Klose's goal, and will be remembered for that mistake.

  • Toby Alderweireld

    Toby Alderweireld

Might have had an assist to Fellaini early, but was let down by his teammate's poor finish. Both Germany and Belgium attacked primarily on the opposite flank, leaving the Ajax man with little to do on either end of the pitch.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

Astutely won the ball from Schweinsteiger early to set up Lukaku, but the striker couldn't finish. Came close with a decent effort early in the game, but his primary value was in defense, where he did very well to close down Lahm and deny the fullback chances with his overlapping runs.

  • Marouane Fellaini

    Marouane Fellaini

Very much involved in creating the Belgian attack, but struggled with the Germans' double-team in central midfield. Had a couple chances to score on the volley but missed poorly.

  • Timmy Simons

    Timmy Simons

Less involved than his central midfield colleagues, and struggled to make much of an impact at either end. Made no major mistakes, but turned no heads.

  • Eden Hazard
    19
    1
    0.00

    Eden Hazard

Struggled for much of the game, but had a moment of brilliance as he dribbled past two defenders before being stopped by Jansen. Also made a clever touch to release Lukaku in the second half. Has plenty of potential but needs to work for consistency throughout the 90 minutes of a game.

  • Moussa Dembele
    11
    2
    0.00

    Moussa Dembele

Beat Lahm multiple times on the attacking end, and dropped deep to defend against crosses. For all his quality out wide, the winger struggled to deliver a good final ball, and only tested Neuer once, with a speculative shot from distance.

  • Romelu Lukaku
    19
    1
    0.00

    Romelu Lukaku

Had a great chance early, but his finish could have been better placed. Beat Badstuber with some fine dribbling a few minutes later, but posed a lonely figure for most of the match and faded to anonymity before being replaced.

Substitutions

    Jelle Vossen

Replaced Simons as a late attacking substitute, but didn't have enough time to make an impact.

  • Steven Defour

    Steven Defour

Replaced Hazard, but was unable to do much. Still looks short of full fitness.

Replaced Lukaku, but failed to make any impact.

  • Manuel Neuer

Manuel Neuer Top of the Match

Wasn't forced to make any wonder-saves, but was always well positioned, and dealt with trouble as necessary. Great distribution as always.

  • Marcell Jansen
    32
    2
    3.00

    Marcell Jansen

Offered far more going forward than did Jerome Boateng at the World Cup, but could have used more support from Lukas Podolski. Made a crucial challenge on Hazard late in the first half, before being surprisingly substituted at the break..

  • Per Mertesacker
    23
    4
    3.50

    Per Mertesacker

Often played as backup to Badstuber, but tracked the Belgian attack well and played several fine balls from the back. Covered very well for Lahm once or twice in the first half.

  • Holger Badstuber
    37
    3
    2.50

    Holger Badstuber

A bit hit-or-miss. Beaten once each by Lukaku and Hazard, but also made superb challenges on both. Was the primary defender of Lukaku and generally kept the powerful striker under wraps.

  • Philipp Lahm
    48
    1
    3.50

    Philipp Lahm

Caught upfield on occasion in the first half, but otherwise had a rock-solid performance. Added an extra dimension to the German attack when necessary, and probably should have earned an assist after forcing a late chance for Mueller.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    39
    3
    3.00

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Much like Badstuber, Schweinsteiger's performance was very hit-or-miss. Cheaply lost the ball early, leading to a Lukaku chance, and made a couple very sloppy fouls. Then again, his assuredness with the ball kept Germany going, and his pressure early in the second half created Klose's goal.

  • Sami Khedira
    32
    4
    3.00

    Sami Khedira

Kept the ball moving quickly and always knew exactly where to be, but struggled to execute. Was in position for a potential early goal but fluffed the chance with a poor finish. When deeper, he was more comfortable, and did very well to maintain possession.

  • Thomas Müller
    52
    2
    3.00

    Thomas Müller

Didn't manage to score, but was Germany's brightest figure in attack for much of the game. Exhibited fantastic movement and playmaking ability when he set up Oezil with a clever back-heel, and was in position to release Klose for the winner. Nearly scored late, but was denied by a fine save.

  • Lukas Podolski
    49
    30
    1.50

    Lukas Podolski

Struggled to make an impact, even with the attacking talents of Jansen in his support. Barely touched the ball, but for a couple very ambitious shots, and was eventually substituted.

  • Mesut Özil
    33
    14
    2.50

    Mesut Özil

Technically brilliant, but when facing a team with organized defence, would benefit from a bit more of an attacking presence in the middle ahead of him. Linked well in attack and had a chance or two in the first half, but ultimately failed to do what he is meant to do: score and create goals.

  • Miroslav Klose
    55
    4
    3.50

    Miroslav Klose

Says he wants to play at the 2014 World Cup, and after performances like tonight's, he just might. Worked exceptionally hard as always, and while he was rarely in a position to score, he took his one chance with aplomb.

Substitutions

  • Heiko Westermann
    17
    4
    3.00

    Heiko Westermann

Offered less in attack than did Jansen, but was assured in his defensive role, and should be satisfied with the quality of his return to the international scene.

  • Toni Kroos
    54
    2
    0.00

    Toni Kroos

Replaced Podolski, and was everything his predecessor wasn't. Like the central midfielder he is, the 20-year old sought the ball, and became intimately involved in the Germany attack. Slipped into the penalty box and almost assisted a late goal, but Klose fired wide.

  • Cacau
    14
    7
    0.00

    Cacau

    Made a brief, two-minute cameo.
