Maribor 3-2 Palermo (3-5 Agg): Sicilians Qualify For Group Stage Despite Setback In Slovenia
The Sicilians may have lost this evening, but they will still be involved in the Europa League group stage...
By Rick D'Andrea
Maribor defeated Palermo 3-2 this evening in their Europa League play-off second leg, thanks to goals from Marco Tavares, Josip Ilicic and Sinisa Andelkovic.
The home side may have had a three-goal deficit coming into this evening's match, but started positively, with Tavares opening the scoring in the 14th minute.
The Slovenians almost doubled their lead three minutes later, as some slack Rosanero defending allowed Dejan Mezga a free header, but he could only hit the crossbar.
Maribor and Tavares found the back of the net again in the 34th minute, but the referee blew his whistle for a handball.
Josip Ilicic's acrobatic goal 13 minutes into the second half made the score 2-0, and the fans started to have faith their side could still qualify. But the player did not celebrate out of respect, as he is a transfer target for the Rosonero.
Abel Hernandez silenced the crowd five minutes later, as he back heeled a goal from a corner. The ball had dropped to the ground, and the striker was the first to react and converted his chance.
The Uruguayan then equalised on 68 minutes with a spectacular team goal.
Sinisa Andelkovic's goal two minutes from time meant that the home side walked away with a 3-2 success, but were unable to qualify for the Europa League group stage.
