Europa League Play-Off Preview: Anorthosis - CSKA Moscow
The Russians lead 4-0 from the first leg...
By Subhankar Mondal
A Mountain To Climb
Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta had been steadily progressing in the Europa League qualifiers from the first round but unfortunately for the Great Lady they will probably have to go out short of the group stage. The 4-0 hammering at the hands of 2005 UEFA Cup winners CSKA Moscow on Thursday last has almost certainly pushed them halfway out of the door.
Anorthosis were down right from the start, when Seydou Doumbia scored a brace in the first 20 minutes and Zoran Tosic added two more in the second half to accomplish a 4-0 rout, giving CSKA one foot in the group stage of the Europa League.
However, miracles do happen in football and Guillermo Angel Hoyos's side will be hoping for one of them to conjure up on Tuesday. Scoring four or more goals will be a Herculean task, But Anorthosis will have home advantage and an early goal or two could alter the contour of this tie.
Done And Dusted
Russian heavyweights CSKA Moscow would be pardoned if they were to believe that they did the job last week. Having won the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie 4-0 at the Arena Khimki in Moscow, Leonid Slutsky's side will need something really hugely demoniacal to lose 5-0 away.
However, CSKA shouldn't take the match too easily and must take care not to concede early. An early goal or two could put the Russian side in a tricky situation.
Moreover, CSKA have had to sell star player Milos Krasic and it will be interesting to see how they react in their post-Krasic era.
