Leonardo Bonucci opened the scoring for Juventus after fifteen minutes and Gordon Schildenfeld claimed a deserved equaliser for Sturm Graz with just ten minutes remaining but as the game came to a close Amauri popped up to claim a victory for Juventus in injury time.
The Bianconeri started the game very brightly indeed, showing their intent straight from the off with Diego the architect for Juve, creating a number of early chances and linking up well with Amauri who caused the Sturm Graz defence problems early on.
As Juve continued to pile on the pressure and had a goal ruled out for offside but the deadlock was broken by Bonucci who powered in a header from a Diego corner on 15 minutes. Juventus were in full control and had a number of opportunities for increase their lead if only they could find that finishing touch.
Graz though did come back into the match as Juve retreated slightly, allowing them to push further forward, with Imre Szabics asking repeated questions of Paolo De Ceglie's defensive ability. The Strum Graz striker also had a penalty appeal waved away following a perfectly timed Bonucci tackle.
As the home team gained in confidence the chances came. Joachim Standfest saw a long range effort travel inches wide and Haris Bukva also hit the post.
This came as a wake up call to the Italians as they regained control of the match, slowing play down and hitting their Austrian opponents on the counter.
Sturm Graz came out after the break galvanised and with intent with Roman Kienast now leading the charge. Schildenfeld unleashed a daisy cutter that was just wide, while Bukva led Marco Motta a merry dance before delivering a telling cross but Claudio Marchisio headed the ball out.
Still dangerous on the counter, Juve struggled to make that killer pass, Diego overhitting on a couple of occasions and Amauri's finishing left a lot to be desired.
Graz continued to make headway in the Juventus half as Weber stung Storari's gloves while Bukva was causing Motta a lot of problems down the left and it was his free kick that resulted in the equaliser for the Austrians. He played the ball from the right just outside the 18 yard box and Schildenfeld took advantage as he rose above the static Juventus defence to head past Marco Storari.
Juventus were shell shocked but Amauri grabbed the winner in injury time as he headed past Christian Gratzei in the Graz goal.
The Italians failed to convince but they do have a one goal advantage to give them some comfort. Graz though will be buoyed by their second half performance that will give them hope for the return leg in Turin next week.
