Slovenia 2-0 Australia: Dedic And Ljubijankic Give Europeans Deserved Win
Youthful Australians outplayed by Matjaz Kek's men.
By Chris Paraskevas
Slovenia have scored a deserved 2-0 win over Australia in Ljubljana, with goals from Zlatko Dedic and Zlatan Ljubijankic settling the match.
With national technical director Han Berger taking charge, the Socceroos had newly appointed German manager Holger Osieck watching and waiting in the wings to begin the post-Pim Verbeek era.
He will have seen the likes of young talents Nikita Rukavytsya and Bruce Djite fail to shine as an Australia outfit without its biggest names was largely outclassed by its European opponent.
Indeed, Djite had one of Australia's few chances when he skied over from close-range after Mile Jedinak's misdjuged cross hit the woodwork, with Slovenia largely dominating possession.
It was no surprise then when they took the lead in the 78th minute through Dedic. Miso Brecko's cross was met by the head of the striker who guided the ball past substitute 'keeper Adam Federici.
Lucas Neill then had the chance to equalise from close range himself but wasted it despite being unmarked at the back post before his error lead to the second goal.
A poor touch at the back allowed Zlatan Ljubijankic to capitalise and drive the ball beyond Federici to settle the matter, the scoreline reflective of Slovenia's general control of the match.
