Denmark 2-2 Germany: Mads Junker Completes Comeback For Hosts
Joachim Loew watched his men capitulate in Copenhagen....
By Andrew McLean
Joachim Loew's men blew a two-goal lead and were forced to settle with a 2-2 draw against neighbours Denmark in Copenhagen. Patrick Helmes scored to give Germany's second string side a two-goal cushion in the second half, after Mario Gomez's opener early in the game.
Dennis Rommedahl and Mads Junker brought the match back on level terms thanks to two mistakes by the visitors.
Mario Gomez gave Germany an early lead after Thomas Hitzlsperger defence-splitting pass. Gomez applied a neat finish to put Germany on the front foot in a contest where both teams were missing key players.
In the second half the game burst in to life and so did Germany. Christian Genter supplied a through ball for substitute Patrick Helmes who doubled the lead.
Germany however lost concentration and allowed Denmark back into the game as sloppy defending gave Dennis Rommedahl time to pick his spot to mark his 100th cap with a goal.
Both Helmes and Gomez should have sealed the result late for Germany but a howler from Tim Wiese in goal allowed Mads Junker to steal a draw late in the game. The goalkeeper misjudged a ball over the top and was stuck in no man's land and Unable to handle the ball, he cushioned it with his chest for Junker to roll the ball home for the draw.
Die Mannschaft will have another tough task as they open their qualification campaign next month with a trip to Belgium. Denmark will be on a high after a resilient performance when they take on Iceland.
