Perhaps should have done better with Ronaldo's first free kicks but could little to stop Marcelo's cheeky chip. Did manage to make a world class save from the Portuguese after a left footed shot.
Linked up well with Cani down the left but did not seem too eager to hit the byline himself. Also allowed Ramos and Ronaldo to boss the right flank too easily at times.
Was out of position for Marcelo's goal but managed to grow into the game and become a useful attacking presence down the right hand side. DId well to get to the byline to assist Cani's goal.
Burst out of defence a couple of times to instigate a few counter attacks but was guilty of rash challenges out of position which left Marchena to cover in behind.
Organised well at the back and made his presence felt to the Real Madrid attackers. Also made a few very important interceptions when Villarreal were outnumbered at the back.
Provided a decent screen to the Villarreal defence in the first 20 minutes but faded out of the game and eventually looked out of his depth in midfield.
Not his most influential game but was neat and tidy as always. Often found himself without enough space to operate.
His job was to get in the faces of Real Madrid's influential midfielders but Xabi Alonso had the freedom of the el Madrigal in the first half to pick passes. Managed to steal the ball a few times but not enough to affect the play when in possession.
Made a few dangerous dribbles through the middle and took his goal well. Passing was intricate when coming infield and looked to put Giuseppe Rossi through any time he could.
Created space with runs into the wings and showed a lot of energy but lacked the quality and the decision making to hurt Real Madrid.
Had an early chance but a poor touch after having got around Iker Casillas proved to be vital as it allowed Pepe in to make the interception. Found himself out on the wing too often and even when running with the ball, he was not decisive and did not cause too many problems.
Did not have too many saves to make and had no chance with the Villarreal goal. Was dominant in his area but should have communicated better with Pepe for Marco Ruben's offside goal.
Was caught on his heels a few times but managed to re-organise when Madrid moved back their defensive line slightly. Adapted well to deal with the pace of the Villarreal attackers.
Did not allow Giuseppe Rossi any time on the ball whatsoever and was dominant from crosses. Pressed the attackers intensely and nicked the ball quite a few times which instigated counter attacks.
Revelled in the attacking freedom he was given and looked dangerous whenever he was running at the Villarreal defence. Took his goal like a seasoned striker and managed to pitch in defensively.
Managed to get down the right on the overlap a few times and looked solid defensively, but drifted in and out of the match.
Allowed Mario to get beyond him a couple of times but was generally solid and reliable.
Had a lot of space to operate and showed off his passing range in the first half especially. Switched the ball at will and lobbed cute passes through the middle for his attackers.
The ability to dribble at high pace was pivotal in Madrid's first goal and showed good vision to slip the ball through to Marcelo. However, did not offer much else in the game and faded as time went on and was eventually substituted.
Did not give the ball away for the majority of the game and even got in a few good tackles in the midfield area.
Showed a good first touch and was neat in his play as the hold-up man, but did not manage to threaten the Villarreal goal himself.
A performance of all-round quality which showed off most of his best attributes. Dribbled at pace and tested Diego Lopez with a wonderful left footed shot. Topped off with two trademark free kicks.
- 25 J. Dudek
- 19 E. Garay
Late substitution to shore up the Madrid backline.
Á. di María
Was given a lot of space as Villarreal were counter-attacking and stretched his legs down the left a few times to keep possession for his team.
Immediately had scoring chances when he came on for Kaka and had a goal disallowed for offside. Kept the ball well and was calm in possession as Madrid ran down the clock in the latter stages.
