America 2-3 Real Madrid: Ronaldo Scorcher Gives Los Blancos Victory
The lead changed three times in this highly-entertaining match played in the USA...
By Rick D'Andrea
Real Madrid have begun their USA tour in positive fashion after the team defeated Mexican side America 3-2 in San Francisco.
Sergio Canales opened the scoring in the 34th minute, but Enrique Esqueda and Vicente Sanchez then allowed the Mexican side to have the advantage on the hour mark. Gonazgo Higuain then equalised to bring the match back to life and Ronaldo put the finishing touches on a highly-entertaining game in the 82nd minute.
Los Blancos fielded a strong line-up which included Canales, Karim Benzema, Fernando Gago and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as new signing Pedro Leon.
The match started off tentatively, with both sides trying to work themselves out in the first few minutes. It wasn't until the eighth minute that the first real attempt on goal came, as Cristiano Ronaldo fired a shot on target. Bouncing in front of America custodian Guillermo Ochoa, the shot-stopper had to use his chest to keep the ball out of the net.
Benzema had a glorious chance to put the Spanish giants ahead on 15 minutes, as Juanfran threaded a pass for the Frenchman to run onto. His shot, though, was well-blocked by Ochoa, who used his chest to clear the danger once again.
The former Lyon hitman had two excellent opportunities to open the scoring just after the half-hour mark. The first came from a corner kick, which was whipped into the middle. Benzema rose above the pack, but could only direct his onto the crossbar. A minute later, Juanfran delivered another ball, and Benzema could only send his attempt wide of the mark.
Sergio Canales opened the scoring after 34 minutes when both Benzema and Ronaldo combined on the edge of the area for a 1-2 pass. Upon receiving the ball, Benzema drew out a defender and the goalkeeper, allowing Canales to make a well-timed run into the middle and tap the ball home.
And it was Ronaldo who almost doubled the scoreline only a minute before half-time, as he leaped higher than Oscar Rojas to header a chance, but only directed it to Ochoa.
Without a shot on target, the Mexican side was keen to show its offensive prowess in the second half. Esqueda blasted a long-range shot from 35 yards out, which had Jerzy Dudek scrambling.
Esqueda then brought the match back to life, as he calmly slotted his shot past Dudek to equalise in the 51st minute. Allowed too much space by the Blancos defence, the Mexican punished the Spanish side.
Vicente Sanchez then gave America the lead on the hour after he perfectly placed his shot past an outstretched Dudek. Running onto a through-pass from Esqueda, the Uruguayan took his time and made sure he converted his opportunity.
Not even two minutes passed and Gonzago Higuain equalised, making the scoreline 2-2. Left in space, the Argentine international kept his opponent at bay and coolly smacked his shot home.
An impressively worked move from Real Madrid almost saw them re-take the lead with 10 minutes left in the match. Starting from a defensive error which was swooped upon by Pepe, the ball was swiftly moved to the other side of the park. New signing Angel Di Maria then whipped in a cross that Ronaldo ran onto and volleyed home, but the linesman adjudged the Portuguese international to be offside.
He was then redeemed two minutes later when Jose Mourinho's side earnt a free-kick just outside the box. Ronaldo stepped up and rocketed home a wonderful strike to give the Spaniards the lead.
