Europa League Qualifier: Hibernian 2–3 NK Maribor (Agg 2-6) – Hibs Euro Dream Ended By Clinical Slovenians
Easter Road side humiliated in Euro defeat...
By Matthew Harold
Hibernian’s European dream is over after they failed to overcome the three goal deficit they were set in Slovenia last week, as they crumbled to a humiliating defeat at home to Slovenian cup winners NK Maribor.
Helped by a large crowd at Easter Road, Hibs went on the attack early. With the reinstated three man attack of Anthony Stokes, Colin Nish and Derek Riordan lifting the home fans hopes that they could achieve the impossible. They started the game extremely brightly, with Stokes going close early on and unfortunately for the SPL side, Riordan was called offside as he looked to get the rebound.
The Edinburgh side looked comfortable at the start of the game as their Slovenian visitors seemed to be happy to sit on their three goal lead and punish their opponents on the break.
Their dominance was nearly rewarded when new signing Edwin De Graaf almost marked his Easter Road debut with a goal, as his strike went just by Marko Pridigar’s right hand post.
Riordan was the next player to look to bring Hibs back into the tie, but unfortunately for the former Celtic striker, Pridigar in the Maribor goal saved his effort.
Minutes later the tie was over as a contest, as Sinisa Andelkovic got on the end of a Dejan Mezga corner to silence the home crowd and put the Slovenian cup winners in complete control.
From there on for the rest of the first half Maribor went on to try to humiliate their hosts, with Dalibor Volas having a shot that just went over Graeme Smith’s goal.
On the half hour mark, Hibs were nearly the makers of their own downfall when a slack header by Michael Hart was missed by centre half Chris Hogg, allowing Marcos Tavares to close in on goal, but his chance was saved by Smith at the second attempt.
Maribor should have been two goals ahead on the night when Armin Bacinovic struck from outside the area. His shot was deflected and fortunately for the home side, Smith got down to push the ball round the post.
With the game seemingly out of reach of his side, Hibernian manager John Hughes looked for his side to go all out attack in the second half. Early into the half they created half chances, with Riordan, Nish and De Graaf having chances, but they couldn’t break down their opponents.
Finally, with eight minutes gone in the second half De Graaf got his name on the score sheet and gave the Easter Road crowd a glimmer of hope, as his strike from the edge of the area rattled into the Maribor net.
With the fans lifted, Hibs went looking for the second and were unlucky not to get it when a well worked move led to Riordan crossing the ball into the box, but Nish could not direct the resulting header into the goal.
Just after the hour mark, Hibs once again had a chance to go into the lead on the night, as Stokes ran at the Maribor defence, but his effort was saved by Rajcevic.
Stokes again, was the culprit for the Edinburgh side, as he once again failed to finish as his shot was blocked by the Maribor defence.
That chance was to come back to haunt the home side, as the Slovenians went up the other end of the park and Dejan Mezga burst into the box, only to be brought down by Kevin McBride, resulting in a penalty.
The Croatian dusted himself down and fired his side into the next round of the Europa League. That goal started an exodus from the home fans.
From there on it went from bad to worse for those fans that stayed in the Easter Road stands, as a superb move from Maribor, led to Volas finding Tavares and the Brazilian knocked the ball home to compound the misery for the home crowd.
After that the game petered out, with Riordan having a half chance to bring some cheer to those left inside the ground, but he could not get this chance on target.
With just a couple of minutes left those fans left did get to see their side score another, as a cross from substitute David Wotherspoon was turned in by De Graaf to get both his second and Hibernian’s second of the game.
Maribor were then happy to see out the game as on the end of injury time they decided to bring on all three of their substitutes as they strolled into the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
