Player Ratings: Tottenham 3-2 Stoke

By Josh Clarke

  • Gomes

    Gomes

Absolutely nothing he could do about the two moments of class from Etherington and Jones and was otherwise largely untested.

  • Vedran Corluka

    Vedran Corluka

Solid game that saw him eagerly to push forward. Comfy on the ball without ever really being hassled too much.

  • Michael Dawson

    Michael Dawson

Did well to keep Jones and Walter under wraps, with the two only occasionally popping up to trouble the Spurs back four.

  • Younes Kaboul
    21
    2
    3.50

    Younes Kaboul

Dealt admirably with the sizeable Stoke front pairing. Jones got the better of him for the goal, but you can hardly blame him for that.

  • Benoit Assou-Ekotto
    20

    3.00

    Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Had his day made much easier by a Bale who was willing to get at his full-back at every opportunity. Defensively, he was threatened in glimpses by Pennant without ever being too worried.

  • Rafael van der Vaart
    39
    4
    3.50

    Rafael van der Vaart

Always lively and worked incredibly well off Crouch and Pavlyuchenko, at the hub of all his sides attacking endeavour.

  • Tom Huddlestone
    32
    5
    3.50

    Tom Huddlestone

Was hit and miss in the middle of the park, spraying the ball around and needlessly giving it area in equal measure. Got about the park though and asserted himself on the game.

  • Luka Modric
    69
    5
    3.50

    Luka Modric

Pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the creative midfielder. Innovation in abundance, he got on the scoresheet and threatened everytime he had the ball in an advanced position.

  • Gareth Bale
    35
    3
    3.50

    Gareth Bale

Regularly surged down the left to good effect but was caught napping and allowed Stoke to score their second.

  • Roman Pavlyuchenko
    39
    5
    3.50

    Roman Pavlyuchenko

Dropped off deep and interchanged well with his sides’ midfield, causing the Stoke defence all manner of headaches. Quality on the ball still seemed suspect though as a couple of half-chances went begging.

  • Peter Crouch
    49
    2
    4.00

Peter Crouch Top of the Match

A first half double that reaffirmed everything we know about the lanky striker. Great finishes both of them and proved the match-winner for his team.

Substitutions

  • William Gallas

    William Gallas

Came on late on to ensure against a Stoke equaliser.

  • Asmir Begovic
    4
    2
    2.50

    Asmir Begovic

With the ball tossed into his box in a manner that he is usually used to witnessing his team utilise, the keeper had a day to forget.

  • Ryan Shawcross
    5
    2
    3.00

    Ryan Shawcross

Essentially the defender will be judged by the fact that his defence let three goals in but in reality, he dealt reasonably well with a Spurs attack that was fluent all afternoon.

  • Robert Huth
    2
    4
    3.00

    Robert Huth

Had to deal with angled balls into Crouch all day long and by and large didn’t do too badly. Three goals let in in the first half says it all though

  • Andy Wilkinson

    3
    3.00

    Andy Wilkinson

Did very well to nip and a steal the ball off Bale for his side’s second goal. Otherwise was largely charged with containing the Welshman, which he did with increasing influence as the game went on.

  • Marc Wilson
    0
    3
    2.50

    Marc Wilson

Remained largely in the background all game. Difficult afternoon all-in-all as he was run ragged by an interchanging Spurs attack.

  • Glenn Whelan
    0
    2
    2.50

    Glenn Whelan

Over-ran in midfield and lost, markedly, in a battle of class with his counterparts. Could do little to quell waves of Tottenham attack from deep in the first half, which effectively decided the course of the game.

  • Jermaine Pennant
    4
    2
    3.00

    Jermaine Pennant

Was ill-afforded the opportunity to get forward in the first half but grew in influence as the game progressed. Neat and tidy without too much innovation.

  • Rory Delap
    2
    3
    2.50

Rory Delap Flop of the Match

Can’t actually remember him hurling the ball into the box once and pretty much spent all day tracking back. Not the best of days.

  • Matthew Etherington
    8
    2
    3.50

    Matthew Etherington

A moment of sheer quality for his goal and was the main source of respite for a Stoke side that was bombarded from the first minute. Dangerous throughout.

  • Jonathan Walters
    2
    2
    2.50

    Jonathan Walters

Was largely anonymous throughout. Most of his work was done defensively in what proved a frustrating afternoon.

  • Kenwyne Jones
    6
    1
    3.00

    Kenwyne Jones

His physicality presented few problems to the dominant pairing of Kaboul and Dawson, until he was gifted a golden chance by Bale and finished with aplomb.

Substitutions

    Salif Diao

Came on late to try change things, but didn't have enough time to influence the game.

  • Dean Whitehead

    Dean Whitehead

    Had little impact

  • Ricardo Fuller

    Ricardo Fuller

Game was already decided when he was thrown on
