Well a remarkable second half turnaround from Everton threatened to burst Kenny Dalglish's bubble but Kuyt's penalty ensured honours were even in this Merseyside Derby. Good game, perhaps a fair result, and thanks for following today.
90' + 4'
90' + 3'
Johnson mishits an optimistic 35 yard half volley straight which trickles harmlessly through to Howard.
90' + 3'
Slight moment of concern as Heitinga lets the ball bounce behind him with Shelvey lurking but Howard claims.
90' + 1'
Everton throwing long balls into the Liverpool box, but the home side have nine men back and are defending well.
Yellow Card Dirk Kuyt
Four minutes of added time here.
Fellaini is penalised for a foul on Kyrgiakos in the Liverpool box.
Foul from Kuyt and a freekick for Everton in the Liverpool half.
OOOOOOOH!! Reina comes and punches the ball clear but only to Coleman who rifles a first time effort in from the edge of the box which JUST trickles wide of the keeper's far post-though he did watch it all the way.
Reina miscues a clearance and it skews out of play for an Everton throw-in deep in the Liverpool half. Then Vaughan wins a corner off Skrtel.
Neville clears Shelvey's corner at the near post. Lucas lifts a cross into the area before Distin heads it clear.
Pressure building from Liverpool as Johnson wins a corner.
Lucas outmuscles Rodwell in central midfield and feeds Shelvey who tries a through-ball with the outside of his right foot for Torres, but just overcooks it and Howard claims.
Good possession from Everton but neither Bilyaletdinov nor Vaughan can pick out a final pass to a blue shirt in the Liverpool area.
Shelvey whips a good cross into the box and as Torres looks to reach it, only alert defending from Distin and then some good covering from Baines denies the Spaniard.
Couple of fouls from both teams, with first Kuyt and then Fellaini offending during a scrappy passage of play. Dalglish has made a change, bringing on Shelvey for Meireles while Moyes brings on Bilyaletdinov for Anichebe.
Kelly swings a cross into the box but Distin clears at the near post.
Neat pass from Kelly in behind the defence and some intelligent movement from Torres keeps him onside to receive the ball. He's well tracked by Distin and tries a neat chip over Howard but it drifts harmlessly over the bar.
Liverpool are starting to get a lot more of the ball now since their equaliser, but chances are few and far between for both sides as the defence's are holding firm.
Lovely weaving run from Maxi takes him past 3 defenders and deep into the Everton half but he overhits his pass to Kuyt and Howard sweeps up behind his defence.
Everton fail to deal with the first ball, it drops to Torres whose shot is quickly blocked by the covering Neville and they manage to clear.
Neat move from Torres and Kuyt sees the Dutchman win a corner off Distin.
Johnson whips a cross into the box which Torres flicks on towards goal but straight at Howard.
Atmosphere really hotting up now, both sets of players are starting to stew as Spearing flies into a challenge on Baines.
Assist Maxi Rodríguez
Penalty Goal Dirk Kuyt
Goal.com's Greg Stobart reports: What a game we have now. For someone who looks so unconvincing in front of goal during open play, Dirk Kuyt sure knows how to take a penalty. Everton are angry but they can have few arguments about the award of that spot-kick.
GOAL FOR LIVERPOOL!!! Kuyt slots it past Howard and that's the equaliser at Anfield! 2-2!
Liverpool win a freekick, Meireles whips it in, Everton fail to deal with it. Rodriguez beats Howard to the free ball and Liverpool have a penalty. Up steps Kuyt....
PENALTY FOR LIVERPOOL!! HOWARD BRINGS DOWN RODRIGUEZ!
Everton work a freekick really well as Distin dummies and then fires a low ball into the box for Anichebe. He holds up the ball well but just fails by inches to lay it off for Beckford in the area.
Yellow Card Fernando Torres
Liverpool increasingly struggling to make openings now, as a desperate through pass from Rodriguez for Torres goes straight out for a goalkick.
Anichebe picks up the ball in space on the edge of the box but his shot is deflected and loops up straight at Reina who saves easily.
Liverpool break down the other end and Kuyt wins a corner off Baines. The corner is cleared well by the defence, but out to Lucas who lifts a cross into the area but Rodriguez can only head it high and wide.
Everton have Liverpool penned in their half, passing the ball well through Anichebe, Arteta before Baines swings a cross into the box which is cleared by Kyrgiakos. As Arteta competes with Lucas for the freeball he fouls the Brazilian.
Good run by Johnson down the left, but he is tracked all the way by Coleman who concedes a corner which Everton manage to clear through Heitinga.
Everton are transformed, playing some lovely passing football at the moment. Arteta almost slips Baines in behind the Liverpool defence down the left but for Kuyt's last-ditch interception.
Liverpool look to get back into the game and Rodriguez slips a neat reverse pass to Meireles in space on the left edge of the box but his slow cross-shot is well held by Howard with Torres waiting to pounce
Yellow Card Pepe Reina
Goal.com's Greg Stobart reports: Unbelievable turnaround at Anfield. Liverpool were furious that referee Phil Dowd played on despite a head injury to Martin Kelly. To be fair to the official, it all happened very quickly but that is a hammer blow and presents a huge challenge to Kenny Dalglish after the first half went so well.
Assist Leon Osman
Goal Jermaine Beckford
Unbelievable!! Everton now lead!!! Beckford scores after some phenomenal work from Osman who picks up Anichebe's knock down on the edge of the box, displays some quick feet to get away from Skrtel and slips a cute throughball between 2 defenders in for Beckford who keeps his feet and fires easily past Reina. 2-1 Everton!!
GOAL FOR EVERTON!! JERMAINE BECKFORD SCORES!!
Slight moment of concern for Liverpool fans as Torres goes down after a heavy challenge from Fellaini. He picks himself up gingerly though.
Anfield slightly stunned by that early equaliser for Everton, and they push forward again as Coleman whips a cross into the Liverpool box but Fellaini fouls Kyrgiakos and the home team have a freekick.
Goal.com's Greg Stobart reports: What a start to the second half for Everton but that was awful defending from Liverpool to allow Distin to head unmarked. The visitors should have been out of sight at half-time and what a fantastic time for them to score. Game on.
Unbelievable start for Everton!! They win a corner with their first attack, which is whipped to the backpost by Arteta. Nobody deals with it for Liverpool and Distin rises above Skrtel and heads home, and despite Johnson's best efforts on the line he can't keep it out! 1-1 at Anfield.
Assist Mikel Amatrian Arteta
Goal Sylvain Distin
Everton get us underway for the second half.
Bit of news at half-time, Daniel Agger is coming off with an illness apparantely. He's replaced by Kyrgiakos.
Goal.com's Greg Stobart reports: Kenny Dalglish's first teamtalk back at Anfield will be simple: more of the same, please. After a scrappy start to derby day, Liverpool have been well on top and could have been out of sight in the last 10 minutes of the half. Most encouraging will be the performances of Fernando Torres and Raul Meireles, who have both been excellent in a high octane performance. Everton will simply be relieved they are still in this one but will have to improve dramatically after the break; there has simply been no cohesion to the visitors passing.
45' + 2'
HALF TIME!! Well these are the same players who have struggled for Liverpool all season long but this is a very different performance from them as they lead Everton 1-0 courtesy of Meireles' strike. Torres and their defence have been assertive so far, but if Everton step up in the second half this could be an interesting contest.
45' + 1'
Very open end to the half, first Anichebe fires a low shot straight at Reina from 25 yards out, and then Torres tries a cute lob over Howard which the keeper manages to paw out from under his crossbar.
Rodriguez is passed the ball by Fellaini and he fires a shot at goal from 30 yards out which is saved well.
Everton swing a couple of crosses into the Liverpool box but neither Beckford or Anichebe look like beating Skrtel or Agger in the air and they both clear.
OOOH!! Liverpool carve Everton open again as Kuyt feeds Meireles down the right hand channel and as he breaks into the box he fires a low shot at Howard which the keeper palms out well.
Everton clear and then break down the other end through Beckford, who fires a cross into the box but Fellaini fails to reach it.
Torres picks up the ball, and weaves past a couple of Everton defenders on the edge of the box before his shot is deflected behind for a corner off Distin. Playing very well here the Spaniard.
Liverpool try to break forward through Johnson down the left. The Everton defence allow him to cut onto his right foot, but he mishits his cross and Heitinga clears.
Liverpool clear through Skrtel and Maxi picks up the ball and feeds Torres in the Everton half. He holds the ball up well before trying to put Meireles clear, only for Fellaini to get back well and concede a throw in.
Another good move from Everton, with Coleman, Arteta and Osman feeding the ball well through midfield before Baines' cross forces Meireles to clear behind for a corner.
Everton have a chance to put some pressure on the Liverpool defence when they win a freekick deep in the Liverpool half but Arteta gets his delivery all wrong and the ball drifts harmlessly behind Reina's goal for a goal kick.
oal.com's Greg Stobart reports from Anfield: "It's been a scrappy affair completely lacking in quality but has all of a sudden come to life. You can visibly see the confidence is flowing through the veins of these Liverpool players after that excellent Raul Meireles strike. Who gets the credit? 'Dalglish! Dalglish' roars the Kop."
OOOOOOH!! It's almost 2-0!!! Torres finds space in the box as the Everton defence opens up, he smashes a shot at goal which is palmed out by Howard. Meireles tries to win the rebound against Heitinga, and succeeds in diverting it to Maxi who fires over.
Goal Raúl Meireles
Assist Dirk Kuyt
One nil Liverpool and it's Meireles who puts them ahead!!! Liverpool work the ball very well, putting Johnson in down the left. He measures his cross well by cutting onto his right. His cross finds Kuyt whose header is well saved by Howard, Kuyt then smashes the rebound goalwards but Howard is up to save again. It then rebounds to Meireles on the edge of the box and he fires past an unsighted Howard and into the top corner.
GOAL FOR LIVERPOOL!! MEIRELES SCORES!!!
After a bright start, this game has rather peetered out into a slightly tedious affair. Neither side has decisively taken a grip on proceedings and both are committing their fair share of fouls.
A minute later Meireles again brings down Arteta this time with a late swipe as the Spaniard looked to clear the ball. No love-loss in central midfield today certainly.
Meireles brings down Arteta with a high boot but just escapes a booking by retracting his boot from the challenge before he touches the Spaniard.
Maxi gets the delivery wrong and Everton clear the danger under very little pressure.
Arteta whips the corner in but Liverpool clear easily and then break down the other end and win a corner for themselves.
From one of those fouls Everton get a freekick. Arteta whips it in, Fellaini beats Skrtel on the left edge of the box and his header across goal is headed behind for a corner by Kelly.
Slightly niggly passage of play with both sides conceding fouls and possession too easily in central midfield.
Everton clear well from Meireles' corner and then Howard is out to punch clear his attempted return cross.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!! Torres hits the post!!! Brilliant stuff from the Spaniard, as he outmuscles Distin to the ball. He takes it in the box, drops his shoulder past Heitinga and fires a left-footed shot past Howard which rebounds off the post and out! Kuyt then stretches and can only hit the shot off Heitinga and behind for a corner!
Goal.com correspondent Greg Stobart is at Anfield today and he reports: "David Moyes is an unhappy man – he's screaming at his players to put more pressure on the Liverpool midfield. The home side have started slightly the brighter and the atmosphere is still crackling at Anfield."
Arteta whips it in but Lucas clears at the near post, the ball comes out to Osman who fires his shot high over Reina's bar from the edge of the box.
Lovely move from Everton. Arteta plays in Baines down the left in the Liverpool half, he picks out Osman in the box and his floated cross is headed behind for a corner by Johnson.
Maxi whips it in but Everton manage to clear partially. Lucas then picks up the ball, feeds Torres in space on the edge of the box but he turns and shoots with his left-foot but gets it horribly wrong and the ball skews high and wide.
Great run by Kelly who beats Baines and Osman down the right flank and wins a corner for the home team.
Victor Anichebe is certainly putting it about upfront, holding off Agger and Skrtel in some one-on-one's on the edge of the Liverpool box as Everton build pressure with some throw-ins, but he takes it a bit far by pushing Agger and Liverpool have a freekick.
First glimpse of Torres as he almost picks up Maxi's pass and gets in behind the defence, but Neville is across to clear via a deflection off Distin.
Spearing passes the ball straight to Beckford who tries to lob Reina from 40 yards out but gets it horribly wrong and the ball drifts over the bar.
Long ball from the back by Distin is miscontrolled by Beckford and Reina sweeps up behind his back four and clears.
Liverpool are playing some decent stuff early on, but then Seamus Coleman picks up possession and charges deep into the Liverpool half but scuffs a shot wide from 25 yards out.
Liverpool get us underway at Anfield!
Kenny Dalglish emerges to a huge round of cheers and applause from the Anfield faithful as the anthemic sounds of You'll Never Walk Alone ring out around the ground.
The teams are out at Anfield and the atmosphere is certainly building up ahead of this match.
Another potentially big story pre-kick off is the absence of Steven Pienaar from the Everton squad. He's been strongly linked with a move away from Goodison Park and have the Toffees seen the last of the South African?
So in Kenny Dalglish's return to Anfield after almost 20 years away from Liverpool he plays local boy Jay Spearing in central midfield in place of the suspended Steven Gerrard, while Everton name Victor Anichebe in place of Louis Saha.
Meanwhile Everton are lined up: Howard, Neville, Heitinga, Distin, Baines, Coleman, Fellaini, Arteta, Osman, Beckford, Anichebe. Subs: Mucha, Hibbert, Bilyaletdinov, Vaughan, Gueye, Rodwell, Baxter.
First up it's the team news. Liverpool are lined up: Reina, Kelly, Skrtel, Agger, Johnson, Meireles, Spearing, Lucas, Kuyt, Torres, Maxi. Subs: Gulacsi, Aurelio, Cole, Pacheco, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Shelvey.
