Udinese got off the mark in Serie A this season with their first point after drawing with Sampdoria 0-0 at the Marassi.

The hosts welcomed back star striker Antonio Cassano into the line-up after he was rested against Cagliari, the club dismissing he was left out for disciplinary reasons earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Udinese had yet to get off the zero point mark, losing their first four games in Serie A in 2010-11.

The visitors started in determined fashion and Antonio Di Natale's put in a pinpoint cross for Giampiero Pinzi within the first ten minutes, but goalkeeper Gianluci Curci made a fantastic save from his close range volley.

Midfielder Angelo Palombo was next to try his luck, curling in a powerful freekick from the right that was tipped over by Samir Handanovic.

In the first half-hour chances were few and far between as Daniele Dessena earned a booking for hacking down the influential Gokhan Inler in midfield.

Pablo Armero's long ball found Di Natale, who tried an acrobatic first-time shot that was flew across the face of goal without troubling Curci.  However, the half finished being more noteworthy for it's physical play rather than any goal-scoring chances.

Luciano Zauri saved a certain goal early in the second-half. Di Natale broke the offside trap and lobbed the goalkeeper from outside the area after bringing the ball down nicely, but the left-back raced back to head the ball away, stopping it from dropping into the open goal.

Cassano made inroads into the box taking on his marker following a short corner and the visitors barely managed to cut out his cross for the Blucerchiati attackers waiting to pounce.

With 20 minutes remaining Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin threw on Chile star Alexis Sanchez for the veteran Di Natale in the hope his quickness and creativity could break the deadlock as the match moved closer to it's conclusion.

Stefano Lucchini fouled Floro Flores on the edge of the area, but the Fruili-based outfit failed to take advantage. Kwadwo Asamoah fired just wide of the far post from the set-piece.

Defender Christian Zapata had done a good job anticipating Cassano all afternoon and was once again alert to stop a break by the Italian international late in the contest. Zebrette substitute Bernardo Corradi had the last opportunity, firing across the face of goal from a difficult angle.

The lacklustre clash ended with no goals after four minutes of injury time, but Udinese did earn their first point of the campaign.
