Getafe 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Elias Salvages A Derby Day Point For Los Colchoneros
Getafe failed to record their second consecutive home victory over Madrid rivals Atletico, Elias the saviour for the Rojiblancos....
By Andrew McLean
The Madrid derby between Getafe and Atletico finished with the points shared at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, but the 1-1 draw will have disappointed Michel's men.
Getafe frustrated and resisted their visitors for over 80 minutes of the match and looked set to leapfrog their city rivals before the equaliser by Elias. Manu del Moral had given El Geta the lead against his former club very early in the tie and the hosts still had chances late in the game to rekindle hopes of a Europa League charge.
Atletico made a bright start in the opening two minutes but found themselves behind one minute later to the delight of the home crowd. Miku held the ball up well inside the area to wait for the support of Manu del Moral, and the forward clipped his shot off Diego Godin and beyond the helpless David De Gea into the top corner.
The visitors were rattled but set off in search of an equaliser; a Jose Antonio Reyes free-kick however was the only time the Rojiblancos tested Jordi Cordina in Getafe's goal in quarter-of-an-hour.
The Azulones were close to doubling their lead after a frantic moment of crossing tennis which bypassed Adrian Colunga twice. Jaime Gavilan and Miku supplied balls in towards the centre-forward but with Atleti caught ball watching, none of the trio could force a second goal.
Frustrations were increasing for Los Colchoneros as Deigo Forlan was flagged offside incorrectly for the second time in the game, the Uruguayan however hit his shot straight at the 'keeper.
With half-an-hour played El Geta were forced into making a change, left-back Mane was unable to continue and Ivan Marcano came on.
Chances kept coming to the former Atletico man, now Getafe captain, Manu but he missed the target on two occasions allowing the Colchoneros to keep in touch with their hosts.
Quique Sanchez Flores' men struggled badly to get into full swing in the second-half, slack passing and dogged performances from the Getafe midfield prevented the likes of Reyes and Forlan from pulling the strings.
With a little over twenty minutes remaining, a wonderful flick in his own half by Reyes set Tiago charging into Getafe's territory, however the final ball across the box by Sergio Aguero had no red and white shirts following it in.
Getafe coach Michel began to reinforce his defence as they closed in on a precious three points and they almost secured them when Miku's cross from the right flashed across the six-yard box without any contact.
They were made to pay in the 82nd minute as they allowed Atletico to level the score. Forlan had enough to time to look up and pick out the run of Brazilian substitute Elias, allowing the midfielder to place a perfect header into the far corner.
Dani Parejo almost broke the visitors hearts very late on, but De Gea got down well to his right to save the midfielder's header.
The draw keeps Atletico above Getafe by two points but they remain three behind Athletic Bilbao in 6th place.
