Borussia Dortmund 3-0 Freiburg: League leaders move eight points clear of Bayer Leverkusen

Despite being without Lucas Barrios and losing Nuri Sahin to injury, Borussia Dortmund had few problems in disposing of Freiburg to move eight points clear of Bayer Leverkusen

Borussia Dortmund went a step closer to their first Bundesliga title since 2002 after a straightforward 3-0 victory at home to Freiburg, which moves them eight points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen. The victory also extends Dortmund's unbeaten run at the Signal Iduna Park to 14 games.

Dortmund took the lead midway through the opening period. Marcel Schmelzer broke forward down the left, reached the byline and cut the ball back towards the centre. With Robert Lewandowski occupying two Freiburg defenders, the path was clear for Mario Gotze to find the corner on his left foot for his sixth goal of a very impressive debut season for the wonderkid.

The home side doubled their lead two minutes before half-time with an attack, which highlighted the strength of Juergen Klopp's men at both ends of the pitch. Mats Hummels won the ball back for his side before attempting to find Gotze with the outside of his right boot. The ball came off Omer Toprak, who was then powerless to prevent Lewandowski from racing clear, rounding Oliver Baumann and scoring his seventh goal of the season.

Dortmund sprung the hapless Freiburg offside trap for their third goal 12 minutes from time as their teamwork proved too hot for Robin Dutt's men to handle. Gotze was put through by Lewandowski and the teenager unselfishly squared the ball to Kevin Grosskreutz, who stroked the ball home into the empty net.

Already shorn of leading goalscorer Lucas Barrios due to an adductor problem, the table toppers lost their midfield maestro Nuri Sahin with a knee problem suffered in the opening ten minutes. The Turkish international tried in vain to continue before he was replaced by Antonio da Silva just before the half-hour mark. Freiburg threatened little before the break with the exception of Cedric Makiadi's 37th minute shot, which was straight at Roman Weidenfeller.

Although Lewandowski got his name on the scoresheet, he showed once more that he is not the most clinical of finishers. He blasted a glorious chance over the crossbar in the first-half and sliced a shot wide on the hour after being put off by the presence of Freiburg defender Oliver Barth. Compatriot Jakub Blaszczykowski was unfortunate not to add a third after a wonderful team move, sparked by a cheeky backheel from the effervescent Gotze.

Juergen Klopp brought on fans' favourite Dede in the closing stages, with the veteran full-back counting down to the end of his 13 years with the club. Freiburg's plight was summed up by a miskick from top scorer Papiss Demba Cisse four minutes from the time.

Dortmund's next assignment is a trip to bottom of the table Borussia Monchengladbach while eighth-placed Freiburg host Hannover at the Badenova Stadion.
