Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1 Werder Bremen: Wiese heroics not enough for visitors as Fenin snatches a deserved point

Martin Fenin's late headed goal canceled out a Halil Altintop own goal as Frankfurt earned a draw against Bremen.

By Clark Whitney

An impressive Frankfurt came back from a goal down to score their first home goal of the 2011 calendar year, and earn a deserved point against Werder Bremen.

Though both sides had plenty of chances in an end-to-end first half, the deadlock was only broken in the 58th minute, when Halil Altintop deflected a free kick into his own net to give Bremen the lead. Theofanis Gekas again and again found himself through with chances on Tim Wiese's goal, but the Bremen goalkeeper made a series of tremendous saves to preserve the advantage. Werder's lack of solidity in defence would prove costly, however, as in the 83rd minute Frankfurt substitute Martin Fenin struck a perfect diving header to earn a point for the hosts.

Neither defence looked very convincing, and it took just nine minutes for Sandro Wanger to slip past the Frankfurt defence. The Bremen striker had an open goal to fire upon, but had his attempt rebound off the right post. Nine minutes later, Gekas was played in with only Wiese to beat, but had his shot saved. The scintillating Marko Marin nearly scored a rare header in the 21st minute, but Ralf Faehrmann dived to claw the effort narrowly wide.

After a slower spell, Claudio Pizarro had an effort from close range saved before Wagner hit the side netting and the whistle was blown for half-time.

The visitors looked distinctly the better side early in the second half, and Marin and Pizarro both came close before the Altintop own goal. The Hanseaten had only a narrow lead to protect, and their inability to score a second would ultimately prove costly. Wiese denied Gekas with three sublime saves around the hour mark. The Greek striker was also denied in the 86th minute, but Fenin's superb header saved a point for the hosts.

The result sees both sides edge further from the relegation zone. Bremen remain 12th with 34 points, while Frankfurt are 13th, one point behind their northern rivals.
