An under-par Bayern Munich had Arjen Robben to thank for a late winner, as the champions overcame a resilient Gladbach to win 1-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Robben's 78th minute winner was enough to hand the Bavarian giants all three points, which help die Roten to move up to third in the league following Hannover's away defeat to Dortmund.

After a slow start to the game, Bayern began to lay siege on the Gladbach goal and came within whiskers of opening the scoring on 18 minutes. After a mazy run down the right wing, Arjen Robben cut infield before sending a fizzing low effort towards goal which Logan Bailly parried into the path of Mario Gomez three yards from goal. Unfortunately for the Bundesliga top scorer, the ball rebounded off his thigh and into the grateful arms of Bailly.

The second-half started at a similar pace, with both sides lacking the urgency required to take control of the game- although the Bavarian giants could have opened the scoring on 54 minutes.

The subdued Franck Ribery picked up the ball on the left-side of the box before turning his marker and unleashing a powerful effort, which narrowly missed the far corner of the net with Bailly at full-stretch.

Die Fohlen came close themselves four minutes later with Patrick Herrmann finding space down the right wing. The 20-year-old delivered an inviting low cross towards Marco Reus, but Holger Badstuber was on hand to desperately divert the ball out of play for a Borussia corner.

Bayern were still threatening and went close on 73 minutes. Ribery did well to clip a cross into the danger zone with an umarked Gomez rising to meet the ball, only to see his effort sail agonisingly wide of the far-post.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute with the home side taking the lead. Robben's slaloming central run saw the Dutchman play a neat one-two with Ribery before sweeping the ball past Bailly from six yards out, a goal that could prove vital for Bayern's aspirations of Champions League football next season.

Substitute Miroslav Klose nearly doubled the scoring four minutes later when Robben squared the ball to the experienced striker, but his 15 yard effort struck the outside of the post with the Moenchengladbach 'keeper beaten.

Bayern visit Nuernberg next weekend, while Gladbach entertain relegation rivals Koeln in a real six-pointer.
