Player Ratings: Freiburg 1-2 Bayern Munich

Goal.com rates the players on show as Bayern emerged from Freiburg with three points after Franck Ribery's late winner...

By Gary Niblock

  • Oliver Baumann

    Oliver Baumann

Could do little about the goal but otherwise he was as safe as houses. More confident from crosses than his opposite number and commanded his defence well. Made two outstanding saves in the second-half, one brave stop at Hamit's feet and another to deny Klose in conjunction with Toprak.

  • Felix Bastians

    Felix Bastians

Quietly impressive once more at left-back - he resisted the temptation to dive into tackles and once he won the ball back, did not try anything too ambitious in possession.

  • Oliver Barth

    2.50

    Oliver Barth

Committed the foul on Mueller, which led to the free-kick and goal but after that he was solid. His positional sense was good as he found himself well stationed to clear crosses into the box.

  • Ömer Toprak

    2.50

    Ömer Toprak

Was beaten to the ball for the first goal by Gomez but thereafter he did a good job of standing up to the striker's imposing presence. Suffered a painful clash of heads with Barth but soldiered on to keep Bayern at bay. Made a vital clearance off the line to deny Klose in the closing stages.

  • Mensur Mujdza
    3
    2
    2.50

    Mensur Mujdza

Had a good game going forward as he broke consistently into the Bayern defensive third and caused problems. His crossing tested Bayern's backline and he also kept a lid on Ribery until the end when he was powerless to halt a fine run from the winger.

  • Anton Putsila

    2
    2.50

    Anton Putsila

Quiet in the first-half as Freiburg targeted Bayern's left-hand side and focused most of their attacks down that flank. Set up a good chance for Makiadi.

  • Johannes Flum

    Johannes Flum

In the wars today, he gave as good as he got and was tidy in possession for the most part but did sell Putsila short in one promising attack. Did a fine job in snapping at the heels of Bayern's offensive players, denying them the freedom they sought.

  • Cedrick Makiadi

    Cedrick Makiadi

Heavily involved in the first half, the former Wolfsburg man played an excellent through-ball to Cisse, won a penalty and went close with a free-kick. Wasted an excellent chance to give Freiburg the lead but equally made a vital interception in the 80th minute when Bayern were swarming around the penalty box.

  • Julian Schuster

Julian Schuster Top of the Match

He was both destructive and constructive in midfield. Left his mark on Thomas Mueller with a nasty foul from behind, which earned him a yellow card. Played some good balls forward, one of which created an opportunity for Barth.

  • Daniel Caligiuri

    2.50

    Daniel Caligiuri

Bright down the right-hand side, linking well with Mujdza and not afraid to have a shot, as his effort, which struck the post, testified. His frenetic style of play did contribute though to him giving the ball away more often than he'd have liked.

  • Papiss Cissé

    3.00

    Papiss Cissé

The prolific striker looked bright early on with a nice backheel to Caligiuri but should have done better when put through against Kraft. Took a terrible penalty but atoned for his error by netting the equaliser. His movement throughout was problematic for the Bayern defence and today he proved again that he is no flat track bully.

Came on for Flum as Freiburg pushed for a winner but he had less success than in the return game.

  • Thomas Kraft

    Thomas Kraft

Redeemed himself after conceding the penalty to save it as he guessed the right way. On occasions was a little unsure as to whether to come for crosses or to stay on his line.

  • Danijel Pranjic

    Danijel Pranjic

Whilst he did not have a horror of a game at left-back, it is fair to say that Freiburg had a lot of joy down his side of the pitch. Looked more comfortable when attacking down either flank. Almost scored a comical own-goal in the second-half.

  • Luiz Gustavo

Luiz Gustavo Flop of the Match

Looked shaky at the back today, as he allowed Cisse to repeatedly drift in behind or into the channels, as seen with Freiburg's equaliser. If he is to flourish at Bayern, it will be in midfield.

  • Daniel Van Buyten
    28
    12
    2.50

    Daniel Van Buyten

The Belgian, who was seemingly enjoying a mini-renaissance, struggled again as he was often flat-footed and static against the movement of Cisse. Fared better when clearing balls with his head.

  • Philipp Lahm
    42
    3
    2.50

    Philipp Lahm

Was not hugely important in the first-half as Freiburg attacked down the other side but when called upon was as reliable as ever. Looked decent when attacking more in the second-half as he gave Bayern another outlet.

  • Franck Ribéry
    78
    0
    3.00

    Franck Ribéry

Delivered an excellent ball for the opening goal of the game but in open play he was well-marshalled by Mudjza. He never had the chance to size up the full-back and work up a full head of steam and his touch even let him down sometimes. However, he still popped up with the magical winner after an enterprising run and brilliantly-placed shot beyond Baumann.

  • Bastian Schweinsteiger
    52
    3
    2.50

    Bastian Schweinsteiger

Not at his best by any means as Freiburg had the better of the first-half but did spray some useful passes forward and out to the flanks. And his passing accuracy was imperious at over 90%. Perhaps against well-organised defences he should mix it up more by recalling the dribbling skills he displayed in his days as a winger.

  • Thomas Müller
    28
    10
    2.50

    Thomas Müller

His movement was decent, especially once Robben went off as he exchanged positions with Hamit. However, he created little as he found little space in which to operate due to Freiburg's excellent protection of their back four. Not a surprise when he was replaced by Klose.

  • Toni Kroos
    26
    7
    2.00

    Toni Kroos

Struggled to contain Freiburg's array of midfielders before the break and though he played the odd penetrative ball forward, he never had control of the middle of the park. Made a howler in the second-half with Cisse in close attendance, which he got away with.

  • Arjen Robben
    40
    8
    2.50

    Arjen Robben

Did not look fully fit and had to come off the field after 30 minutes. He had little impact during his time on the pitch and it is to be hoped that he is not too seriously injured.

  • Mario Gomez
    47
    2
    3.00

    Mario Gomez

Popped up yet again with the goal demonstrating his aerial prowess but he was not a constant threat due to the excellent defending of Barth and in particular Toprak. Also did his fair share of work back defending from set-pieces.

Substitutions

  • Hamit Altıntop

    Hamit Altıntop

Given the task of replacing Robben and had a solid game. Was everywhere in midfield, opening up space with his ability to carry the ball forward, as well as being tenacious in the tackle. Will feel he should have scored one of the chances, which fell his way.

  • Miroslav Klose
    39
    4
    2.50

    Miroslav Klose

Wheeled out of the garage again with 20 minutes left to get a goal. Looked like he had scored but Baumann and then Toprak denied him.

  • Anatoliy Tymoshchuk
    37
    12
    2.50

    Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

Came on for the last quarter-hour in place of a disappointing Kroos but was too eager to impress his coach.
