Leverkusen moved back into second place in the Bundesliga standings with a comfortable 3-0 victory over a lethargic Wolfsburg at the BayArena.

The home side opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a great team goal which was eventually finished by Lars Bender. The lead was doubled eight minutes later with the magnificent Renato Augusto getting on the scoresheet before the Brazilian set up Stefan Kiessling for a third on 46 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

The home side looked the better team in the opening exchanges but it was in fact die Woelfe who created the first real goalscoring opportunity on 12 minutes. With Leverkusen temporarily reduced to ten-men due to the injured Manuel Friedrich receiving treatment on the touchline, Cicero was allowed time and space to break into the box at pace before cutting the ball back to Sascha Riether. Rene Adler was beaten but the former Freiburg midfielder could only hit the post from six-yards out.

Pierre Littbarski's men were left to rue the early miss on 21 minutes when Bayer took the lead. Simon Rolfes' through ball was brilliantly flicked into the path of Lars Bender by Sidney Sam. The ex-1860 Munich brother of Sven controlled the ball before striking a precise shot into the bottom corner of the net from 18-yards with Diego Benaglio well-beaten.

Leverkusen's tally was doubled on 29 minutes with some shocking Wolfsburg defending to blame. Arne Friedrich attempted to bring the ball out from defence but his tame pass to Diego was intercepted by Bender who played it to Rolfes. The Leverkusen captain slid the ball into the space left by Friedrich and Renato Augusto was afforded the time and space to run onto the pass and squeeze the ball past Benaglio into the net from the edge of the box.

The home side were able to put the result beyond doubt on the stroke of half-time and were grateful once again for some kamikaze defending by Wolfsburg. Renato Augusto was once again given plenty of space 25 yards from goal before the Brazilian flicked the ball over the top of the away team's defence. Simon Kjaer in particular was static as Stefan Kiessling was able to run in on goal and lift the ball over the on-rushing Benaglio to give the Bundesliga high-flyers a 3-0 half-time lead.

When the game resumed for the second-half, Wolfsburg pushed for a way back in the game but looked devoid of ideas in attack despite Dieumerci Mbokani and Grafite both coming on to add power and strength to a weak front-line.

It was in fact a relaxed die Werkself who continued to look the more threatening of the two sides and on 58 minutes, star playmaker Renato Augusto came close to making it four. The Brazilian controlled a great long ball with his head, in the process running clear of Kjaer before smashing a powerful effort towards goal from 15 yards which was brilliantly parried by Benaglio.

Leverkusen will look to continue their impressive form when they travel to Mainz next weekend while Wolfsburg will be looking for a vital home win against Nuernberg.
