  • ALL OVER IN GELSENKIRCHEN!! Schalke fall to Hamburg, who nick this game 1-0 courtesy of Ruud van Nistelrooy's winner. Not bad considering he was the subject of major transfer speculation last night. Hamburg fought very hard and were very disciplined - a deserved win. Do take time to read our report, ratings and reactions. Thanks for joining me and until next time, Auf Wiedersehen.
  • 90' + 2'
    SubstitutionEljero Elia Piotr Trochowski
  • 90' + 2'
Another change late on as HSV wind down the clock with Trochowski coming on in Elia's stead.
  • 90' + 1'
    Yellow Card Lukas Schmitz
  • 90' + 1'
Schmitz is booked for a foul on Ze Roberto, which looks to have done the left-back no favours as he gets up from the challenge limping.
  • 90'
Schalke have a corner with seconds to go in normal time. Again, it's overhit to the far post and even when it comes back in, HSV are able to cope. Two minutes of stoppage time.
  • 89'
    SubstitutionJonathan Pitroipa Robert Tesche
  • 89'
Pitroipa earns a rest for the last couple of minutes and he's replaced by Robert Tesche.
  • 88'
AGONY FOR SCHALKE!!! A brilliant cross from Matip, Raul goes for the header, is beaten to the ball by Kacar, who diverts the ball into the path of Schmitz, who slides in at the far post but drills his effort into the side netting!
  • 87'
Not with such lacklustre delivery from the right as Farfan provided on that occasion. Hamburg continue to keep the ball and punt it forward in the hope of luring the Schalke defence into a fatal mistake.
  • 87'
Ben Hatira eats up a few more precious seconds as he's flagged for offside. Schalke still lacking that spark despite the introductions of Jurado and Draxler. Can they rescue a point?
  • 86'
Hamburg are frustrating Schalke by playing keep ball, as is their right of course. They have been the better side and do deserve the three points.
  • 83'
    SubstitutionIvan Rakitic Julian Draxler
  • 83'
Magath goes to the bench and brings on the very exciting youngster Julian Draxler, who has scored nine goals for the under-19 side this season in twelve games. He impressed greatly during the club's training camp in Belek and was even handed a start against Trabzonspor.
  • 82'
Jarolim takes one for the team to nip the infant counter-attack in the bud, tripping Jurado.
  • 81'
    Yellow Card David Jarolim
  • 81'
Jarolim feeds Ben Hatira in the inside-left channel; his cross is deflected off the defender and it loops up for an easy catch for Neuer. HSV come again with Pitroipa, who is dispossessed by Metzelder, who then makes an impromptu run forward.
  • 80'
Elia gets in behind Matip but he is forced to check back and wait for support, which allows the right-back to recover and poke the ball behind for another HSV corner. There are some glum faces among the home supporters and rightly so.
  • 79'
Nobody home at the back stick for Schalke to meet Pander's delivery. Matip was the nearest but never really had a hope of getting there.
  • 78'
Promising ball from Ben Hatira towards Pitroipa draws Neuer momentarily out of his goal but the ball doesn't quite run for the winger. Down the other end, Demel thinks he's shrugged off Jurado but Kircher awards Schalke the free-kick.
  • 76'
Great work from Farfan to track back but the counter attack breaks down when he and Rakitic get in each other's way. With their wires crossed, Hamburg breathe a collective sigh of relief.
  • 75'
Pander delivers the outswinger onto the head of Huntelaar who jumps too early, is underneath the ball and consequently heads it high over the crossbar.
  • 74'
Farfan finds Jurado whose ball in to the danger area is underhit and disappointing. Raul retrives the situation and wins a corner off Demel.
  • 74'
Pander, who was something of a free-kick specialist before his injury problems, curls the ball over and around the wall but his effort goes wide, striking the supports for the net behidn the goal.
  • 73'
A rare burst from Farfan after the break and he is the victim of a late challenge from Kacar, who came in after Farfan had let go of the ball. Free kick to die Knappen 30 yards from goal in a central position.
  • 72'
Schmitz wins a corner off Demel who closed down the space for the cross. Schalke still look pretty flat and that's a below-par corner from Jurado, headed away at the near post.
  • 70'
Metzelder to the rescue! Elia's cross from the left was headed towards goal by Van Nistelrooy but it wasn't the most powerful effort and Metzelder helps it behind for a corner, which comes to nothing. HSV look like getting a second on the counter with the likes of Elia, Pitroipa, Ben Hatira who are quick and of course Van Nistelrooy's finishing.
  • 69'
Smart interception from Rakitic to cut out Aogo's pass before he then undoes that work by ceding possession almost immediately afterwards. Jarolim fouls Huntelaar and Schalke have a free-kick, which they are prevented from taking quickly.
  • 68'
There was a lot of controversy and debate over Magath's decision to give his stars a very short Christmas break, which he later rescinded. However, the effects of their 11 day training camp in Belek could be taking their toll - Schalke only arrived back in Germany yesterday at 1730 CET, landing at Dusseldorf Airport.
  • 67'
Aogo storms forward through the centre of the field and van Nistelrooy does well to keep the ball in play before buying a throw-in off Matip.
  • 65'
    Yellow Card Ruud Van Nistelrooy
Van Nistelrooy is booked for a striker's challenge on Farfan as he tracked back with the winger.
  • 65'
    Yellow Card Jurado
It looks like Jurado was booked there for dissent as he was claiming that Aogo had got the last touch.
  • 64'
Rakitic does well to beat two men and find Jurado, who with a stunning change of pace opens a way down the right-hand side. However, he is well tracked by Aogo and takes one touch too many as the ball rolls behind for a goal-kick.
  • 63'
Lovely play from Ben Hatira who evaded two men but he gets greedy and tries to do too much. We haven't seen a real chemistry between Ben Hatira and Ruud today, as there was in the friendly against Ajax last week.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionEdu Jurado
Edu with a daisycutter of a shot wide of the goal and it's his last action of the piece as he is replaced by the much more creative Jose Manuel Jurado.
  • 61'
Van Nistelrooy is taken down from behind by Hoewedes and falls in installments. Jurado is stripped down and ready to come on and try and change the course of this game.
  • 59'
    Yellow Card Edu
  • 59'
Edu with another scrappy midfield foul on Ze Roberto and he finds himself in the referee's book. Hamburg are winning all the challenges in the middle of the park. Jermaine Jones would be handy today! Or Christian Traesch...
  • 58'
Raul applauds the idea as Pander plays the ball forward looking for the Spaniard but it's overhit. Schalke don't really look like getting back into this game as it stands. They need some inspiration from Farfan, Raul or Huntelaar.
  • 56'
Hamburg have a free-kick as Schmitz trips Pitroipa over on the right-hand side. The left-back then receives a telling off from Knut Kircher.
  • 54'
    SubstitutionChristoph Moritz Christian Pander
Felix Magath responds instantly to going behind as he withdraws Christoph Moritz and replaces him with Christian Pander.
  • 53'
    Assist Guy Demel
  • 53'
    Goal Ruud Van Nistelrooy
TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HAMBURG!!!! VAN THE MAN!!! He's staying at Hamburg and he's delivered the goods. Superb work from Guy Demel down the right. He hung the cross over to the back post, Neuer was disorientated and Van Nistelrooy gets in behind Matip to head the ball into the net.
  • 51'
Brilliant work from Pitroipa to escape the clutches of Schmitz, not once but twice, but it's third time lucky for the left-back, who puts the ball out for a corner. Ze Roberto's corner is deep and Neuer claims above his head at the far post in the absence of any pressure from a red shirt.
  • 50'
Rakitic hits out at the referee but he has little argument as he clearly checked Jarolim and brought him down. Ze Roberto's free-kick is a little disappointing and headed clear.
  • 48'
Edu does well to beat the first man who is Pitroipa but he takes too much on and has neither the pace nor the close control to beat two more. Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy retrieves a lost cause for Hamburg, which almost pays dividends for HSV. Elia loses his man and gets onto Jarolim's ball but he loses his footing at the vital moment and can only stab his shot wide with Neuer advancing.
  • 46'
Elia swings in a dangerous cross, which bobbles along the turf and is cleared by Schmitz at the far post. Not the worst delivery from Elia, and into a very good area.
  • 46'
Welcome back for the second-half and here's hoping this game kicks into life, just as the Leverkusen-Dortmund game did last night. It appears that both sides are unchanged at the break. Van Nistelrooy and Ben Hatira kick us off.
  • Barely ten seconds of stoppage time are played and it's scoreless at the break. Neither Schalke nor HSV have really shown what they are capable of so far. Join me in fifteen minutes for the second period.
  • 45'
Outstanding tackle from Aogo on Farfan, who does well to then find a team-mate in Ze Roberto and Hamburg keep possession inside their own defensive third. Westermann wins a free-kick after Raul tugs his shirt having been skinned by the HSV skipper.
  • 44'
It's headed away initially but Elia wins the ball from Moritz before coming infield and drilling the ball wide of the post. It was a well-struck shot but it lacked direction and Neuer had it covered.
  • 43'
Schmitz thinks about berating himself for a foul on Pitroipa then pulls out before he even gets started. Still, it's another set-piece for die Rothosen, which Ze Roberto will whip in from the right.
  • 41'
Hoewedes juggles with the ball on the edge of the box before teeing up Rakitic, who blasts his shot into the Nordkurve. The angle was always against the Croatian, especially once he chose to strike the ball on his right foot.
  • 41'
Once more, Farfan is the target down the right but he is forced infield, which opens up space for Matip. His cross is headed behind for a corner, despite Elia's best efforts to keep the ball in play.
  • 40'
    Yellow Card Heiko Westermann
Kiss of death from me there because Mortiz has just played a terrible ball, which is cut out by Jarolim. However, Schalke win the ball back and Westermann is booked for a lunging tackle, which brings Rakitic tumbling to the ground.
  • 38'
Farfan plays the ball back to Moritz, who again beats his man but when he looks to pull the trigger, Aogo gets the block in. Moritz has had a very good game so far and is supporting Farfan well as the right-hand central midfield player.
  • 37'
Pitroipa attempts an audacious dink over the top of Metzelder inside the box but Van Nistelrooy does not read the winger's intentions and he had far too much ground to make up - Neuer collects.
  • 36'
Terrific tracking back from Farfan to slide in and dispossess Elia - that is a side of the game he has really worked on and improved at Schalke under Magath's management.
  • 35'
A clumsy foul from Huntelaar on Kacar - the Dutchman hasn't quite had the rub of the green so far. He's looking to restore his goalscoring form after a bright start to life in Gelsenkirchen.
  • 33'
A second successive poor ball from Farfan and Hamburg can counter, first with Pitroipa and then Jarolim. Elia is then illegally hustled off the ball by Farfan, who is penalised.
  • 32'
Kacar has been everywhere so far and he is across to help the ball behind and snuff out Huntelaar. S04 have a corner, which Farfan will take.
  • 31'
Excellent play from Moritz to beat his man and then find Farfan who doesn't quite continue from where his team-mate left off as he's unable to wrap his foot around the ball.
  • 29'
After a foul from Metzelder on the right, Ze Roberto whips in the free-kick, which is skied over the bar via the head of Westermann. Neuer looks to blast the ball upfield to Raul and catch the HSV defence unawares but Pitroipa is back and he does just enough.
  • 28'
Ze Roberto almost inadvertently puts the ball into his own net but Rost scrambles across to his left to parry the ball away. Huge appeals for handball from the Schalke fans and players alike but there is no whistle forthcoming. Huntelaar's errant touch allowed Kacar the chance to clear - he struck Elia accidentally - never a question of a penalty there.
  • 26'
Hamburg work it wide to Aogo down the left and he wins a corner off Matip. Ze Roberto comes across to take and the outswinger is missed again by Neuer, who is caught hopelessly out of position in the centre of the six-yard area. Kacar's near-post header is heading in but Moritz is at the far post and he clears off the line.
  • 25'
Good work as ever from the honest and tireless Edu who blocks Demel's progress down the right. It was in the reverse fixture in August that Demel stormed down the right in an incredible 80-yard surge.
  • 24'
Ze Robeto looks to release Van Nistelrooy but Hoewedes makes an interception with his chest. Farfan is then sent clear down the right but as he looks to take on his nemesis Aogo, Elia trips the Peruvian from behind. Needless really, given how well Aogo has done thus far.
  • 23'
Farfan, as ever, is the outlet for Schalke down the right. He stands there with a frustrated look across his face as Aogo gets the better of him and the ball goes behind for a goal-kick. Joachim Loew is in the stands for this game - he was also in attendance in Leverkusen last night.
  • 21'
And when you keep it on the ground and play like that, why lump it forward? Elia jinks inside, plays a gorgeous ball inside Schmitz to Pitroipa. The Burkinabe winger squares it for Van Nistelrooy, who makes a desperate lunge for the ball but cannot quite make up the ground in time.
  • 21'
Hamburg are frequently looking to expose a perceived lack of pace and mobility at the back from Schalke by playing the direct ball over the top of midfield. It's had mixed success up until now.
  • 20'
Pitroipa is brushed aside as he looks to beat Metzelder and Schmitz, who then storms forward with tireless energy to cross into the box. Moritz is arriving but he can't make clean contact with the ball, which wasn't quite right for the midfielder and HSV survive.
  • 18'
Schalke win a corner after Westermann's back header goes behind. The captain rues his choice and a shout from Rost would have been helpful. However, the corner is cleared away from inside the six-yard area.
  • 17'
Farfan worms his way in between two defenders and latches onto Matip's toepoke forward. Kacar is in the right place at the right time to stretch and cut the ball out before it reaches the unmarked Raul, who had dropped a little deeper than the line of red shirts.
  • 16'
Edu's pressing forces Kacar into a mistake as the Macedonian needlessly puts the ball out of play having come across to make the interception and stop the 1-2 Edu was looking to play with Rakitic.
  • 15'
Schalke have had a few moments but HSV have been better in their general play. We're yet to see the home side really click into gear and HSV have been able to get in behind the defence on a couple of occasions.
  • 14'
Hamburg wanted a penalty but in truth, Pitroipa should never have gone to ground when he had such a great opportunity to give his side the lead. Such profligacy could come back to haunt die Rothosen.
  • 12'
NO PENALTY!!! Pitroipa is sent in behind Schmitz - in typically direct manner he races into the box, takes the ball inside Neuer and falls to the ground but it's an excellent decision from the ref as Pitroipa fell anticipating Neuer's trailing leg but the German goalie withdrew it in the nick of time.
  • 10'
Chaos in the Schalke defence as Neuer flaps at - and misses - the corner, which hits Van Nistelrooy and balloons over the crossbar. The Dutchman knew little about that.
  • 9'
A poor defensive header from Metzelder hands Hamburg a glorious opportunity. Anis Ben Hatira shoots narrowly wide of the post with van Nistelrooy lurking - Neuer did well to get a touch on the ball and HSV have a corner.
  • 9'
Matip concedes the foul with a clumsy and needless trip on Elia, who was going nowhere. Jarolim looks to cross into the box but his ball finds a wall of royal blue shirts in the penalty area.
  • 7'
Edu strikes the free-kick past the wall but it's a comfortable take for Rost low down.
  • 6'
As ever, there is a superb atmosphere inside the Veltins Arena. Farfan has another opportunity to run at the HSV defence and as he looks to beat Ze Roberto on the outside, the veteran sticks out a trailing leg and S04 have a free-kick just outside the penalty box.
  • 5'
Jarolim neatly dispossesses Edu however the attack is somewhat anti-climactic as Elia's ball looking for the run of Van Nistelrooy is far too strong and the ball sails harmlessly behind for a goal-kick.
  • 4'
Farfan looks to get motoring down the right-hand side but the overlap with Matip doesn't come off as the pass is played a little too far away of Uchida's replacement and the move breaks down.
  • 3'
Kacar looks for van Nistelrooy with the long ball forward btu the striker is well marshalled by Metzelder who puts the ball into touch.
  • 2'
Raul releases Edu on the left-hand side. He beats Demel on the outside but his cross just evades the posse of players in the middle. Farfan tries to retrieve the situation but Hamburg are able to clear their lines.
  • 1'
Demel comes inside Edu and looks for Elia down the right. The Dutch winger, linked with a move away to Wolfsburg, tussles with Metzelder before dragging the German international down and conceding the free-kick.
  • 1'
Referee Knut Kircher blows his whistle and gets us underway in the Veltins Arena. Schalke kick us off in their royal blue with Hamburg all in red.
  • Hamburg won the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season and so Schalke will be looking for revenge as they push for a Europa League spot. Heiko Westermann is making his second appearance as HSV captain against his former club.
  • Hamburger SV: Rost - Demel, Kacar, Westermann, Aogo - Pitroipa, Jarolim, Ze Roberto, Elia - Ben Hatira, Van Nistelrooy
  • Schalke 04: Neuer - Matip, Metzelder, Hoewedes, Schmitz - Farfan, Rakitic, Moritz, Edu - Raul, Huntelaar.
  • Guten Abend und willkommen to another exciting Bundesliga clash on the first day of the second-half of the season. Schalke 04, who have climbed into tenth position after a horror start to the season meet fellow underachievers Hamburger SV, who were left reeling after Ruud Van Nistelrooy reportedly stated his desire to return to Real Madrid. I'm Gary Niblock and I'll be guiding you through all the best of the action from the Veltins Arena, which incidentally has been passed fit to stage the game, having suffered damage to its roof during the heavy snowfall.
