Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Borussia Moenchengladbach: League Leaders Ease To Victory Over Basement Side

The league leaders continue on their way with another breathtaking display of attacking football to brush the league's worst defence aside.

League leaders Borussia Dortmund eased to a 4-1 victory to further underline their championship credentials. After Marco Reus opened the scoring for Borussia Moenchengladbach, the hosts battled back and equalised through Neven Subotic on the stroke of half-time. Shinji Kagawa netted the go-ahead goal after the interval before Kevin Grosskreutz and Lucas Barrios added late strikes to round off a comfortable victory for the hosts in a packed Signal-Iduna Park.

Although Gladbach are bottom of the table, they are capable of scoring against anyone with their array of attacking talent and it was their brighest star Marco Reus who fired them ahead just after the half-hour, somewhat against the run of play. The winger profited from the reluctance of the Dortmund backline to close him down before unleashing a wonderful right-footed strike, which curled away from Roman Weidenfeller and into the back of the net.

The league leaders found themselves in a familiar predicament as they had also fallen behind last week against Freiburg. This week, as last, they produced the perfect response with Neven Subotic netting a crucial equaliser on the stroke of half-time. The giant Serb defender rose highest of anyone in the box to head home Mario Goetze's corner past Christofer Heimeroth, who prior to the goal, looked unbeatable.

The league leaders flexed their muscles after the break and moved swiftly through the gears. Six minutes into the second half, der BVB deservedly moved ahead after the impressive Shinji Kagawa latched onto Mario Goetze's glorious through ball before calmly rounding Heimeroth and stroking the ball into the empty net.

To their credit, Gladbach never threw the towel in and Roman Weidenfeller was forced to make a sprawling save from Igor De Camargo to keep the advantage intact. However, Juergen Klopp's men pulled away in the last quarter. A superb backheel from Barrios prised open die Fohlen's defence and sent Kevin Grosskreutz clear. The substitute did not disappoint as he kept his composure to slide the ball past the onrushing Heimeroth and double Dortmund's lead.

The home side put the icing on the cake with two minutes remaining as Barrios turned goalscorer. Dortmund's leading scorer from last season timed his run to perfection as he met Antonio Da Silva's piercing through-ball before shooting beyond Heimeroth.

Dortmund restore their seven-point advantage over Mainz at the top of the Bundesliga and next week they face a trip south to face Nuernberg. Gladbach meanwhile continue to languish at the bottom of the table and they host high-flying Hannover at Borussia Park in their following game.
