Los Angeles Galaxy 0-2 Kansas City Wizards: Galaxy Can't Get Past Wizards' Magic Tricks
LA loses second consecutive league game at home since 2007.
By Jonathan Vera
CARSON, Calif -- The heat wave may have subsided in Southern California, but the Kansas City Wizards decided to bring their own as the club from Hogwarts topped LA 2-0 in front of 20,112 disappointed Galaxy fans.
The Wizards' Davy Arnaud cast Magic Missile and scored the opening goal after a questionable uncalled foul on Todd Dunivant in the midfield. Foul or no foul, LA gave up the early goal once again.
Galaxy midfielder Juninho was supposed to start in today's match-up, but preliminary reports indicate the Brazilian had to fly back to his native Brazil to deal with personal matters.
First Half
Kansas City opened up the show with a goal in the 12th minute of play. It all started in the midfield where Kei Kamara and Todd Dunivant fought to receive a lob from across the field. Dunivant went down claiming he was pushed, but the ref didn't buy it. Kamara took off charging on the right flank and connected with Davy Arnaud in the right corner of the penalty box. Arnaud almost lost the ball, but quickly gained control and sent it flying far-side past the feet of Donovan Ricketts and in for goal, and LA once again gave up an early lead.
Shortly then, the desperation of the LA side started the show on the pitch as the Galaxy surrendered finesse for more physicality.
In the 36th minute, KC almost scored again. Arnaud picked off and fumbled Galaxy ball and the rush was on. It was a two-on-one with Birahim Diop along with the charge. The two stormed into the area. Arnaud crossed to Diop and a very confident Ricketts came off his line and stuffed Diop's shot attempt. It was close but the Jamaican giant's confidence was bigger than his own towering frame.
Second Half
The bottom forty five was entirely different for the Galaxy's style of play. Coach Bruce Arena must have sparked a fire in them, because even though the physicality was still there, the chances and opportunities seemed plentiful. However, this newly found surge did was not enough to put the team on the scoreboard.
In the 70th minute of play, Kansas City knocked in another goal that started from a set piece. Arnaud took the free kick from 25 yards out and sent the cross in, which found its way into the six where Jimmy Conrad wrestled Edson Buddle for position. Conrad managed to get a head on it and redirected into the net past the paddles of the outstretched Ricketts.
The Galaxy tired to muster all they could but where unable to get a grip on the ball. Fortunately for them though, LA still holds the best record in the MLS thanks to Columbus' inability to beat Dallas earlier in the day.
