J. Hernández 75'
It's a case of what might have been for Roberto Di Matteo's side after that penalty miss by Odemwingie, which would have put them ahead with the game at 1-1 in the second half. As it turned out, it was United who went on to get the winner and complete their 11th Premier League victory of the season as they move three points clear at the top of the table for at least a couple of hours. Meanwhile, West Brom suffer their fourth successive league defeat and remain just three points above the relegation zone.
FULL-TIME: West Brom 1-2 Manchester United
90' + 5'
Morrison has another strike from distance but, unlike in the first half, he puts his effort wide.
90' + 4'
90' + 4'
Fortune comes on for Mulumbu but it's probably too late for him to save this match for the Baggies.
90' + 2'
Yellow Card Nemanja Vidic
We will have five minutes of added time and Rooney has come back on as United have used all their substitutes. However he is still limping around the pitch. Vidic is booked for a foul on Tchoyi.
Yellow Card Chris Brunt
Rooney breaks after a sustained period of pressure from West Brom. However, Chris Brunt brings him down for which the Baggies midfielder recieves a yellow card. He also appears to have hurt Rooney with the challenge and the England striker limps off.
Sir Alex Ferguson (who is 70 this year) gives Chris Foy a taste of the hairdryer treatment as he stands red-faced on the touchline.
Yellow Card Fabio Da Silva
Fabio Da Silva becomes the second United player to go into the book after Chris Foy penalises him for coming through the back of Thomas.
Yellow Card Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
Hernandez is booked for catching Scharner's ankle as he challenged for the ball.
It seems as though West Brom will come to rue Odemwingie's missed penalty unless they can grab an equaliser in the last ten minutes. Thomas dances into the United area but his well-placed shot is cleared off the line by Vidic.
Assist Wayne Rooney
Goal Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
GOAL FOR MANCHESTER UNITED!!! The visitors will not feel too aggrieved at that denial of a spot-kick now as Hernandez nods in from Rooney's corner. Roberto Di Matteo will be displeased with his side's poor defending though.
United appeal for a penalty themselves as Fabio's cross appeared to be cleared by Thomas with his arm.
Fabio Da Silva
Tchoyi replaces Ibanez whilst Neville comes off for Fabio Da Silva. West Brom played a few minutes with just ten men there as Tchoyi waited for a stoppage in play before being allowed to take to the field.
Ibanez is the second West Brom defender to go off injured as he joins Steven Reid in departing this match early.
Rooney drives into the West Brom area but is eventually dispossessed and the home side clear.
Missed Penalty Peter Odemwingie
Penalty save Tomasz Kuszczak
MISSED PENALTY!!! Odemwingie puts the spot-kick wide of the left hand post after Thomas had been brought down by Ferdinand just inside the penalty area.
PENALTY FOR WEST BROM!!!
Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
And the substitutions are made. Obertan and Berbatov are the players to come off for Gibson and Hernandez.
Gibson and Hernandez are getting ready on the touchline and it looks like United changes are imminent.
United are enjoying a better spell of possession but are struggling to break down a West Brom side who are defending resolutely.
Great chance for Scharner from Brunt's corner but the Baggies defender cannot direct his free header on target.
Chris Brunt overhits a long free-kick which sails over the head of everyone in the United penalty area. The Baggies have restarted brightly though.
Thomas dribbles down the left wing and plays a pass into Brunt just outside the penalty area. However, the Northern Ireland international's curling shot goes just wide of the left hand post.
Manchester United get us back underway...
A very impressive performance from the home side in the first period. Despite being rocked by Rooney's early goal, Morrison's sublime strike got them back on level terms and you could argue they deserve to be in the lead at the break, especially as they had what looked like a clear penalty turned down. Neville will also count himself fortunate to still be on the pitch after he brought down Dorrans in the area. If the match continues in the same fashion in the second half, you would have to think that United's unbeaten record this season could be under threat.
HALF-TIME: West Brom 1-1 Manchester United. Despite a late corner, the Baggies can't grab another goal just before the break.
Great chance for Dorrans as Odemwingie picks him out brilliantly on the left hand side of the United area. However, his strike hits the side-netting and he should probably have done better with that.
It's been a brilliant first-half performance from the home side here as they continue to pass the ball around with confidence.
The ball is laid off to Odemwingie in a central position just outside the area, but the Nigerian hooks his shot horribly wide.
Thomas is putting in a good display here as he drives at the United defence and lays the ball off to Chris Brunt on the left wing. However, there's no West Brom player in the area to capitalise on the cross.
Hopefully all games in 2011 will be as good as this one. Both sides look likely to score with every attack.
Obertan plays Rooney into the West Brom penalty area but the England striker is correctly adjudged to be offside.
West Brom claim for a penalty as Dorrans runs onto a long ball behind the United defence and is brought down by Gary Neville. However, Chris Foy ignores the appeals of the Baggies players and fans though replays suggest that he may have got that one wrong as the United defender didn't seem to get any contact on the ball. Chris Brunt almost gets immediate retribution but his long range strike goes just over the bar.
Just moments later Thomas cuts in from the left but hits his low shot straight at Kuszczak.
A great run by Obertan down the left as he accelerates past the West Brom defence. However, he cannot find Rooney in the penalty area and the home side clear.
That goal seems to have done wonders for the home side as they enjoy their first prolonged spell of possession in this match.
Goal James Morrison
GOAL FOR WEST BROM!!! An absolutely stunning strike from James Morrison. A long ball from the back is headed away by Vidic but only into the path of Morrison who sends a half-volley fizzing into the top left hand corner of Kuszczak's net. Sublime.
Rooney does brilliantly to win the ball in midfield before playing in Fletcher on the right. However, the Scottish international overhits his cross which sails out for a goal-kick.
Chris Brunt's delivery from set-pieces could be a key area for the Baggies today. The Northern Ireland international puts in a typically dangerous corner but Vidic clears well.
Thomas almost steals in at the back post for West Brom but mis-controls the ball which goes out for a goal-kick.
Assist Patrice Evra
Goal Wayne Rooney
GOAL FOR MANCHESTER UNITED!!! New year, new start for Wayne Rooney as he grabs his first goal from open play this season. Obertan lays the ball back to Evra on the left wing and the Frenchman puts in a cross that Rooney nods downwards and past Carson's right hand.
We're underway at the Hawthorns...
Earlier in the season, West Brom fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. However, if recent history is anything to go by they will do well to get anything from today's game. United have won four of the past five league games between the two sides and have won on their last six league visits to the Hawthorns (stretching back to 1984).
So the big pre-match news from the Hawthorns is that Edwin Van Der Sar drops out of the United side due to flu and is replaced by Tomasz Kuszczak. Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher and Gabriel Obertan are the other changes for the league leaders. West Brom have also made four changes from their last game with Steven Reid, Pablo Ibanez, Paul Scharner and Chris Brunt coming into the Baggies team.
West Brom subs: Myhill, Tchoyi, Miller, Shorey, Zuiverloon, Fortune, Cox. Manchester United subs: Amos, Owen, Hernandez, Fabio Da Silva, Evans, Gibson, Bebe.
And the Manchester United line-up is: Kuszczak; Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Obertan, Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson; Berbatov, Rooney
Let's start with the West Brom side: Carson; Reid, Scharner, Pablo, Cech; Mulumbu, Dorrans, Brunt, Morrison, Thomas; Odemwingie
Happy New Year! And welcome to Goal.com's live coverage of today's Premier League clash between West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United. Team news on its way....
