Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle: Lennon & Bale Take Spurs Above Chelsea Into Fourth Despite Kaboul Red Card

Tottenham moved into the top four of the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at White Hart Lane.

Aaron Lennon had given the home side the lead, beating Tim Krul with an effort that deflected off James Perch.

Younes Kaboul was sent off for a headbutt on Cheikh Tiote, but Spurs doubled their lead through Gareth Bale with ten minutes remaining.

Tottenham started with just one change to the side that beast Aston Villa on Boxng Day, with Roman Pavlyuchenko replacing the suspended Jermain Defoe, while Newcastle were without Kevin Nolan as Alan Smith came into the midfield.

It took 14 minutes, but Pavlyuchenko was the first to have a shot at goal, collecting a wayward header from James Perch and sending a half volley low at Tim Krul.

But Newcastle were equal to Spurs in the opening exchanges and had a better chance to score when Jonas Gutierrez flighted a cross in towards Andy Carroll, who had Gomes scrambling but could only head onto the roof of the net.

It took a while for the game to get going, but the game kicked into gear after a bounding Gareth Bale run was stopped at the last moment by Fabricio Coloccini as the Welsh winger looked to cross.

Bale was given a free kick shortly after for what looked a clean challenge by Alan Smith and Rafael van der Vaart forced Krul to tip the ball over the bar with a dipping set piece.

Newcastle were still very much in the contest though and Cheikh Tiote was guilty of being wasteful in front of goal after dispossessing Wilson Palacios, sending a weak shot to Gomes’s left when he had Carroll as company.

Palacios lost the ball again, this time to Carroll, but the resulting free kick from Joey Barton failed to clear the defensive wall.

Spurs recovered though, and could have gone in ahead on the stroke of half time, as Assou-Ekotto first crossed for Van der Vaart who couldn’t connect with the ball properly with the goal at his mercy, before Hutton delivered for Pavlyuchenko, whose firm header was tipped onto the post by Krul, hitting the opposite post on the way out.

Spurs came out for the second half without Palacios, who was replaced by Jermaine Jenas, and the home side immediately looked the brighter and were ahead ten minutes after the interval.

Kaboul had wandered into an advanced position and found Lennon on the right hand side with a fine pass, before the winger shot, saw his strike hit Perch as he attempted to block, and beat Krul into the bottom right hand corner.

The Frenchman who had set up Lennon for the goal was about to make Tottenham’s task a lot more difficult though, as he needlessly headbutted Cheikh Tiote in an off the ball incident to hand Newcastle the man advantage.

Spurs seemed to rise to the challenge though, as Bassong replaced Pavlyuchenko to fill the gap left by Kaboul.

And the home side nearly doubled their lead when Lennon could have had a second, but he could only drill wide, this time without the help of a Perch deflection, after being found in space by substitute Jenas.

Spurs eventually did have their second though, as Newcastle pressed having brought on Nile Ranger to chase the game.

Carroll was tackled by first Hutton and then Modric, and the Croatian found Bale, who took Simpson into his own area, moved the ball to a narrow angle and fired across goal to beat Krul.

Newcastle would have one more chance through a Carroll header, but Gomes kept the effort out to make sure Spurs finished the day in the top four.
