Newcastle United 1-3 Manchester City: Tevez Scores First Goals Since Transfer Request Saga To Keep Mancini's Side Second

Argentine the hero once again for Citizens

Manchester City consolidated their grasp on second spot in the table after Carlos Tevez scored his first goals since his contentious transfer saga.

The visitors took an early lead through Gareth Barry before the Argentine doubled their lead inside the opening five minutes. Andy Carroll then pulled one back for the hosts in the second half, before Tevez completed his double to seal all three points.

City had the advantage with the first shot of the game. Tim Krul tried to find Steven Taylor with a short pass but it was wayward and allowed Tevez to intercept 20 yards from goal. The Argentine slipped the ball to Barry in the left-hand side of the area and the Englishman made no mistake, sending the ball into the far corner of the net.

It went from bad to worse for United, as the visitors were two goals up within five minutes. James Milner found space on the right and sent a low cross into the centre, where Tevez got ahead of his man and sent the ball flying into the top left-hand corner of the goal.

Newcastle had a chance to open their account within minutes. Carroll found himself unmarked eight yards from goal and was picked out with a perfect cross from the right. He made a good connection with his header, but sent it straight at Joe Hart in the Manchester City goal.

The visitors continued to push forward, with Milner pulling the strings in midfield. His pass found David Silva in space 20 yards from goal, but the Spaniard got his wires crossed with Yaya Toure and sent his through ball into the wrong side of the penalty area. Moments later Tevez let fly from range with a stinging drive, Krul was beaten but the shot zipped just over the crossbar.

Newcastle sustained this spell of pressure and fought hard to try and get a foothold in the game. Joey Barton brought the crowd to life with his energy and this lifted the team. Carroll almost saw a deflected effort steal into the top left-hand corner after a lovely drag back to create space. Luck didn't break his way, as his shot rattled off Nolan and went just wide of the target.

Chances were few and far between in the second half as Manchester City looked to close out the space in midfield and hold onto their lead. Alan Pardew decided to throw on an extra forward with an hour played, with Nile Ranger coming off the bench to replace the ineffective Wayne Routledge.

Carroll had been starved of support all afternoon, so when he scored it was unsurprising that it came from a set piece. Barton's corner came in from the left and Carroll got above the crowd to direct his header beyond Hart to give Newcastle a lifeline in the game.

City almost regained their two goal advantage minutes later as they sprang on the counter attack. Tevez exchanged passes with substitute Adam Johnson before motoring toward the Newcastle goal. Cheikh Tiote showed a swift turn of pace to make up the ground on Tevez, forcing the Argentine to turn in the penalty area. This allowed others to get back and provide cover and Newcastle eventually cleared.

Their resistance didn't last long and City soon had a third. Tevez, a thorn in the side of Newcastle, was played into the left-hand side of the box where he wriggled to create space. He was tightly marked by Fabricio Coloccini but this didn't prevent him getting his shot off and it deflected off his countryman and into the bottom left-hand corner beyond the helpless Krul.

Newcastle were deflated by this setback and couldn't rally themselves for a late flourish. City's defensive resilience shone through as they held on the collect the three points.
