    Wojciech Szczesny

Good early punch from a Stoke free kick but was a bystander for much of the opening half. Had to be at his best to keep out John Carew's fierce strike from 25-yards with a one handed save at full stretch in what was another clean sheet and strong performance from the youngster.

  • Bacary Sagna

    Bacary Sagna

Another solid display from the French right-back. Not troubled in defence and he got forward every time his side had the ball. Advanced into some great positions in the final third but his final ball let him down.

  • Sébastien Squillaci

    Sébastien Squillaci

Got into the action early as he was on hand to tap in Bendtner's cross to give his side the lead in the eighth minute. The Frenchman did his job defensively, and alongside Djourou dealt with the late bombardment of balls into the box from Stoke.

  • Johan Djourou

Arsenal looked very solid at the back and it is no coincidence that Djourou returned to the heart of the defence. He is composed on the ball and wins everything in the air, while continually tidying up for his side. The Gunners' back four is far better when he is in it.

  • Gael Clichy

    Gael Clichy

Kept Jermaine Pennant quiet up until half-time but in the second-half he dived in too much against the pacey winger. The Frenchman did not get up in support as much as he usually does.

  • Cesc Fàbregas

    Cesc Fàbregas

The Arsenal captain started brightly, feeding the Gunners forwards with his exquisite passing, but he only lasted 15 minutes and was replaced by Andrey Arshavin because of injury. Arsene Wenger will be hoping it is not a recurrence of the hamstring injury which plagued him earlier in the season.

  • Alex Song

    Alex Song

Better display from the Cameroon international. He protected the back four well and also got forward in support of the Gunners attacks when the play allowed him too. Some of his passing was sloppy and he gave the away the ball too easily on occasions but all in all decent night's work for the midfielder.

  • Jack Wilshere

    Jack Wilshere

The youngster gets better with every game. Tonight, in the absence of Fabregas, he got Arsenal ticking and his direct running style caused Stoke all sorts of problems. He did not shirk his defensive responsibilities either showing his battling qualities by tracking Jermaine Pennant all the way back to his own byline and winning a goal kick.

  • Samir Nasri

    Samir Nasri

Still getting his sharpness back after his injury lay-off but is getting better with every minute on the field. Moved into the middle of the park in the absence of Cesc Fabregas but his passing was not quite up to scratch at times.

  • Theo Walcott
    128
    38
    3.50

    Theo Walcott

The unlucky winger suffered what looked like a bad injury late in the game but Walcott started the game at an electric pace and got in behind the Stoke backline three times in the opening stages. Was unlucky not to get a goal after his shot rebounded back off the post but like his team-mates he faded as the game wore on. Arsenal will be hoping his injury is not as bad as it looked.

  • Nicklas Bendtner
    135
    34
    3.00

    Nicklas Bendtner

Given the nod to lead the line for the Gunners in the absence of Robin Van Persie and did not let his manager down in the opening stages. He showed great persistence in winning a corner for his side when it seemed a lost cause and from the resultant set piece he teed up Sebastien Squillaci for the goal. His performance did drop though after his good opening spell and he went missing for large parts of the game.

Substitutions

  • Denilson

    Denilson

Replaced Theo Walcott with 18 minutes left on the clock. Given the job of helping Arsenal see out the game but he made a clumsy challenge on the edge of the box which nearly cost his team.

  • Andrey Arshavin

    3.50

    Andrey Arshavin

Called into action earlier than expected after the injury to Cesc Fabregas. Showed great effort for his side and did his best to help his side get a second. The little Russian showed he has his confidence back after skipping past Marc Wilson and teeing up Theo Walcott, but the winger failed to convert the chance.

  • Marouane Chamakh

    Marouane Chamakh

Had ten minutes in the place of Nicklas Bendtner but did not have long enough to make an impact..

  • Asmir Begovic

    Asmir Begovic

Despite picking the ball out of his net in the eight minute Begovic hardly had another save to make. He made on routine stop to deny Jack Wilshere but was not tested as much as he probably expected.

  • Marc Wilson

    Marc Wilson

The full-back did a good job firstly against Samir Nasri and then Andrey Arshavin. He closed down their space and did not give them any space or time. Only beaten by Arshavin once where he dived into a tackle but on every other occasion he timed his tackles to perfection.

  • Ryan Shawcross

    Ryan Shawcross

Jeered by the Arsenal fans every time he touched the ball after his involvement in Aaron Ramsey's injury a year ago, but the defender coped well and put in a good display. After the blistering Arsenal start he settled down his troops and they kept Arsenal at bay.

  • Robert Huth

    Robert Huth

Composed display for the former Chelsea man, keeping Bendtner pretty quiet for much of the game and making some vital interceptions. He had one towering header at goal from Rory Delap's long throw but he could only direct it over the bar. A man with his ability in the air should have done better with the chance.

  • Danny Pugh

    Danny Pugh

Troubled by Theo Walcott's pace and movement, the full-back could not get near the England winger and he was relieved when Walcott left the field.

  • Jermaine Pennant
    9

    3.00

    Jermaine Pennant

The former Arsenal man hardly had a kick of the ball in the first half but showed his quality in the second with a couple of dangerous crosses into the box for John Carew. Went close with a free-kick in the dying stages which was only a whisker wide.

  • Dean Whitehead

    Dean Whitehead

The midfielder put in a high energy display up against the skill and guile of the Arsenal midfield. Kept his discipline and tackled all night.

  • Rory Delap

    Rory Delap

His long throws were a threat as always but Stoke could not get high enough up the field to make them effective. Used as a holding player in midfield and he worked hard to keep Arsenal quiet.

  • Glenn Whelan

    Glenn Whelan

Part of the midfield three which provided cover for the Stoke defence. Did not have much impact on the game with the ball at his feet but worked hard without it to close down the space for Arsenal's midfield.

  • Jonathan Walters

    Jonathan Walters

Patrolled the left side of a five man midfield. Had to curb his attacking instincts as Arsenal dominated proceedings. But the striker was disciplined and worked hard for Tony Pulis' men.

  • John Alieu Carew
    7
    34
    3.00

    John Alieu Carew

Cut an isolated figure for much of the match. He won plenty of headers up against the Arsenal defence but he lacked support around him. Had one superb effort which produced a stunning save from Wojciech Szczesny. Had another glimpse of goal in the second period when Jermaine Pennant whipped in a superb cross but other than that he lacked the service to worry Arsenal.

Substitutions

  • Andy Wilkinson

    Andy Wilkinson

Brought on right at the death to replace Marc Wilson and made an instant impact with a great ball into the box, but Ricardo Fuller could not make anything of it.

Ricardo Fuller Flop of the Match

Given 13 minutes to help get his side an equaliser. Failed to connect cleanly with from Andy Wilkinson's cross in the dying stages.
