Barcelona 5-0 Real Sociedad: Messi & Co. Humiliate La Real
It was all too easy for Josep Guardiola's men ...
By Vasil Kotsev
Barcelona regained first place in the standings tonight with a resounding 5-0 victory over a surprisingly toothless Real Sociedad outfit at the Camp Nou. David Villa opened the scoring early in the first half and Andres Iniesta doubled the hosts' lead near the half-hour mark. Lionel Messi added a brace after the break and substitute Bojan added a fifth to seal the three points for the Catalans.
It did not took long for Barcelona to hit their stride as they managed to open the scoring as early as the 9th minute when Villa was left with a simple finish from close range after being picked out by Pedro on the left.
Five minutes later, Real Sociedad went on their first and what would prove to be one of their few meaningful attacks for the game when Antoine Griezmann was released down the left wing, but his first touch let him down.
Near the twenty-minute mark Barcelona could have made it two, but Pedro could not put the finishing touches to a fine team move involving Lionel Messi, Villa and Iniesta. Messi was inches away from his first goal of the night just before half hour, but saw his finish cleared off the line after rounding Claudio Bravo.
Barcelona did manage to double their lead in the 33rd minute when Bravo let Iniesta slide a shot at the near post after a one-two between the Ballon D'Or nominee and Pedro. The keeper almost made another howler moments later when he made a hash out of a simple ball on the right side of the box.
The Blaugrana went all guns blazing right from the start and scored a third goal just two minutes into the second period. Messi added to his season tally with a fine finish from the right side of the penalty area after three one-twos between him and Daniel Alves.
With the three points already in the bag, Barcelona dropped a gear, but continued to dominate the game. In the 65th minute substitute Bojan almost forced Ion Ansotegui into an own goal and nine minutes later Villa was denied his brace by a wonderful block by the defender.
In the 87th minute Messi got his second of the night with a sublime solo effort and Bojan added a fifth in injury time to complete the rout.
Following tonight's result Barcelona are first in the standings with forty points, while Real Sociedad are eighth with twenty-two points. The Catalans' next league game is a visit to Espanyol in six days, while la Real host Valencia on the same day.
