Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich: Arturo Vidal Penalty Cancels Out Mario Gomez Opener

Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Bayern Munich: Arturo Vidal Penalty Cancels Out Mario Gomez Opener

AMario Gomez opened the scoring for Bayern Munich, but Arturo Vidal leveled before half-time, and Leverkusen earned a 1-1 draw with Bayern.

Mario Gomez scored his 12th goal in nine games for Bayern Munich, but Leverkusen came back to earn a deserved point in a match billed as a must-win for both parties.

Gomez tapped in the opener on 34 minutes following a majestic sequences of passes betwen Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller, and finally Bastian Schweinsteiger. It appeared as though the visitors were set to enter half-time with the lead, but Sidney Sam won a penalty in the closing moments, and Arturo Vidal made no mistake to equalise from the spot.

Bayern supporters will claim that Gomez's opener was a long time coming after a questionable offside call denied Bastian Schweinsteiger an early opener.Vidal's equaliser could only be considered deserved, however, especially after Sam grazed the woodwork after making an outstanding turn. The hosts also had a half chance to equalise before Vidal's penalty, when the Chilean's shot was parried and cleared just ahead of Sam.

After the break, Bayern were strong in possession, and limited the visitors' chances on goal until the final quarter of the game. Eren Derdiyok slipped into the box after a fine through ball from Vidal. Moments later, the former Colo-Colo man blasted on target, and Hans-Joerg Butt's parried save went just wide of Derdiyok.

The game became stretched in its latter stages, and the hosts were arguably more dangerous, although neither side did enough to earn the three points. Gomez saw his late header whistle just over the bar, and the final whistle blew with the score still at 1-1.

The result will not be satisfying for either side. Leverkusen fall to third, two points behind Mainz, while Bayern slip to eighth, and are now 14 points behind leaders Dortmund.
