Hannover 0-4 Borussia Dortmund: Ten-Man Reds Overpowered As BvB Extend Bundesliga Lead

Dortmund earned an impressive 4-0 victory in Hannover on Sunday, extending their league lead to four points.

Substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski made a strong bid to win back his starting role as Dortmund extended their lead in the Bundesliga table to four points following Sunday's 4-0 win in Hannover. The Polish winger, who was replaced by young prodigy Mario Goetze in his team's last three competitive matches, came on for the final quarter hour and was a real sparkplug, scoring once and creating another.

It took just 11 minutes for the visitors to take the lead; Shinji Kagawa skillfully took a through ball at the top of the penalty area, skipped to the left, and struck a brilliant finish into the bottom-right corner. Hannover improved in the second half, but BvB were next to score thanks to a brilliant through ball from Nuri Sahin, which Lukasz Piszczek redirected towards Lucas Barrios, who finished comfortably from close range. After Karim Haggui was dismissed for a silly, off-the-ball challenge on Blaszczykowski, Sahin missed a spot kick. However, Dortmund would not be denied a third goal; after Blaszczykowski's close-ranged effort was saved, fellow substitute Robert Lewandowski volleyed home a late third to round off an impressive away win.

Dortmund were dominant in the first half, and Kagawa could have had a brace within 23 minutes, but his shot from distance flew just over the bar. The Japanese came close with another attempt before Piszczek nearly punctuated an 80-yard run with a goal of his own.

Didier Ya Konan had a chance or two to equalise before the break, but the Ivorian was stopped on 31 minutes, and later had his effort strike the side netting after he did well to run past Mats Hummels.

Hannover were improved in the second half, and other than Mario Goetze's saved effort on 54 minutes, the hosts were in control of the match. Mikael Forssell fired a blast that forced a fine save from Roman Weidenfeller, and Moritz Stoppelkamp also had a good effort saved before he was forced to withdraw with an ankle injury.

For all their control of possession, the hosts struggled to break through, and left themselves open on the counterattack. With 18 minutes to go before full time, Barrios put the game out of reach after a world class ball from Sahin. Hannover's hopes were instantly deflated, and Haggui took out his frustration on Blaszczykowski by kicking the Pole several seconds after committing a hard, but fair, tackle. The Tunisian defender was promptly sent off and Dortmund were awarded a spot kick, which Sahin failed to convert.

Still, the visitors were able to round off a comfortable win thanks to the brilliant Blaszczykowski, whose effort allowed Lewandowski to volley a third goal into an open net, and whose late fourth punctuated an outsanding performance.

The result of this afternoon's match leaves Dortmund four points clear of Mainz at the top of the Bundesliga table, and extended their away record to a perfect six wins from as many matches. Hannover slump to tenth, by contrast, but remain eight points clear of the drop zone.
