Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-3 Bayern Munich: Late Lahm Goal Earns Point For Wasteful Visitors

Philipp Lahm scored a late equaliser to spare Bayern Munich's blushes.

By Clark Whitney

Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayern Munich played out a highly entertaining 3-3 draw tonight in a match that saw the lead change hands three times before the final whistle.

Within the opening five minutes, Patrick Herrmann scored a goal reminiscent of Ronaldinho's effort against England at the 2002 World Cup; he floated a long ball from the right byline that caught Hans-Joerg Butt off his line and sailed into the net.

Bayern quickly rebounded, however, and Mario Gomez headed in Toni Kroos' cross before Bastian Schweinsteiger cheekily back-heeled a Danijel Pranjic cross to put Bayern ahead.

After the break, substitute Igor de Camargo played a fine through ball to Marco Reus, who levelled with a strong finish. Shortly after the hour mark, the two combined once more, with De Camargo beating Daniel van Buyten to the ball and finishing well to put the hosts back on top.

Only in the 84th minute did Philipp Lahm levelled the score once more as he capitalised on a fortunate bounce and curled his finish into the top left corner.

Following Herrmann's opener, Bayern were fully dominant in possession and very dangerous in attack. Three minutes before half-time, Hamit Altintop won a penalty from birthday boy Sebastian Schachten, but Schweinsteiger's spot kick glanced off the right post.

'Schweini' had previously had his header strike the underside of the post. Kroos was also denied by the woodwork as he tried to chip Heimeroth who had just made an outstanding save from Gomez. At the half, Bayern could have been 5-1 up, but a combination of poor luck and woeful finishing left Gladbach within striking distance.

The turning point for Gladbach was the addition of De Camargo, whose play alongside Reus was outstanding. Gladbach were by far the better team for the opening 25 minutes of the second half, and appeared to be well on their way to earning three points.

However, Bayern fought back, and their pressure paid off when Anatoliy Tymoshchuk's through ball took a fortunate bounce on its way to Lahm, who equalised. In a frantic finale, both teams had their share of chances, but neither could capitalise, and each side earned a deserved point.

The result leaves Gladbach still at the bottom of the table, with seven points from eleven matches. Following wins for Hamburg, Nuernberg and Freiburg, Bayern slip to ninth place in the league table, with 16 points.
