Player Ratings: Mainz 0-2 Borussia Dortmund

Goal.com rates the individuals who featured in Borussia Dortmund's 2-0 win away to Mainz.

By Clark Whitney

  • Christian Wetklo

    Christian Wetklo

A mixed bag. Made brilliant saves from Kagawa, Hummels, Schmelzer, and Goetze, but also had a pair of howlers. He was caught in no-man's land as Barrios hit the inside of the post, and also nearly conceded an own goal when fielding a back pass. Earns a good rating only because he was not punished for either mistake.

  • Christian Fuchs

    2.50

    Christian Fuchs

Hard in the tackle and skilled with the ball, the Austrian was very active on the left flank. Set up Szalai for a free header, and forced a fine save from Weidenfeller.

  • Nikolce Noveski
    33
    3
    3.00

    Nikolce Noveski

Strong in the air even against Dortmund's physical brawlers, and excellent in the tackle. Was beaten once by Goetze, but generally played his role well.

  • Bo Svensson

    4
    2.50

    Bo Svensson

Somewhat fortunate to be bailed out by the referee's whistle early, Svensson was less engaged than Noveski, and not quite as effective.

  • Niko Bungert
    5
    6
    1.50

Niko Bungert Flop of the Match

Cheaply conceded possession to Kagawa shortly before Goetze's opener. Looked uncomfortable, and lacked chemistry with his teammates in attack. Justly replaced by Risse at the half.

  • Elkin Soto

    4
    2.00

    Elkin Soto

Booked for a rash challenge, but was otherwise first to the ball on most occasions. Struggled to deal with Dortmund's urgent, direct play, however, and was caught out of position more than once.

  • Eugen Polanski
    5
    4
    2.50

    Eugen Polanski

Would have earned a 7 if not for the missed penalty, which he really should have taken better. Won an outstanding nine of his eleven challenges, and did rather well to break up play.

  • Marco Caligiuri
    7
    2
    3.00

    Marco Caligiuri

Like his central midfield colleagues, Caligiuri was also quick to the ball, and played fairly well on the whole Could have done better in possession, but his defensive work was rather good, even though Dortmund forced plenty of opportunities.

  • Lewis Holtby
    17
    1
    3.00

    Lewis Holtby

Ran his socks off, but could never free himself from Bender and Sahin. The 20-year old playmaker showed occasion flashes of brilliance, but was rarely given enough space to work his usual magic. Might have had an assist if not for some great goalkeeping by Weidenfeller.

  • Adam Szalai
    8
    8
    2.50

    Adam Szalai

Worked very hard and won a number of free kicks, including a penalty. However, a striker's job is to score goals, and the Hungarian wasted a number of opportunities.

Substitutions

  • Marcel Risse

    2.50

    Marcel Risse

Not as sloppy as Bungert, but struggled. Was late to the ball, and only had a few touches - Fuchs was definitely the favoured attacking fullback.

  • Andreas Ivanschitz

    Andreas Ivanschitz

    Brief cameo at the end.

  • Andre Schürrle

    Andre Schürrle

Given just 19 minutes to create a comeback, and never really had the opportunity.

  • Roman Weidenfeller
    34
    2
    4.00

    Roman Weidenfeller

Tested intermittently, but was absolutely rock-solid. Saved Polanski's penalty, as well as Fuchs, Szalai, and Allagui. Any of those shots could have gone in, and if they had, would have changed the entire course of the game.

  • Marcel Schmelzer
    27
    2
    3.50

    Marcel Schmelzer

Will be remembered for firing a swerving rocket towards goal that forced a great save from Wetklo shortly after the half hour mark. Aggressive, industrious, and effective at both ends of the pitch, it may not be long before he earns his first appearance for the Germany national team.

  • Mats Hummels
    15
    3
    3.00

    Mats Hummels

Very shaky in the opening minutes, but improved after Goetze's opener, and nearly headed in a goal. Replaced on 68 minutes after picking up a knock.

  • Neven Subotic
    15
    12
    2.50

    Neven Subotic

Beaten once by Allagui, and once more by Holtby the moment before he conceded a penalty for a poor foul on Szalai. And yet, he really wasn't all that bad for most of the game. Still, the Serbian centre half loses points for critical lapses in concentration.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    14
    6
    3.00

    Lukasz Piszczek

Proved a good outlet on the right flank, but his defensive work occasionally raised questions. Caught out early in the second half when Allagui nearly equalised.

  • Kevin Großkreutz
    23
    2
    3.50

    Kevin Großkreutz

Not very much involved in the attack, but very useful nonetheless. The young German's physicality matched that of the Mainz midfield, and he played an important role in winning the ball and harrying his opponents.

  • Nuri Sahin
    37
    2
    3.50

    Nuri Sahin

Rather than being a ball player, the Turk showed his versatility by tracking Holtby and playing a very defensive role. Still had the positional sense to step forward and deliver the final ball for Goetze's opener, however. Grew more involved in the Dortmund attack as time passed, and elegantly distributed later in the game.

  • Shinji Kagawa
    42
    2
    3.00

    Shinji Kagawa

Had a brilliant effort saved and nearly found his way through on goal another time. Also nearly picked up a late assist, but his timing was adjudged to be slightly too late. Such was the afternoon for the Japanese playmaker, who played second fiddle to Goetze.

  • Sven Bender
    37
    1
    4.00

    Sven Bender

Played Barrios through on goal in the first half, but was generally used in a defensive role. Not always first to the ball, but he tracked Holtby very well, and in doing so, shut down the Mainz attack.

  • Mario Götze
    80
    5
    4.00

Mario Götze Top of the Match

Absolutely brilliant. His composure, confidence, and patience are suggestive of a much older player. Waited and carved out a chance early with immaculate touch, then opened the scoring with utmost class. Later, he beat one defender, then drew two away from Barrios so the striker would have a clear path to goal - such vision is rarely observable in veterans, let alone 18-year olds. Truly rose to the occasion in the biggest game of his young career. Man of the match.

  • L. Barrios
    33
    2
    4.00

    L. Barrios

Might be the Gonzalo Higuain of the Bundesliga. The striker did everything right before firing an effort inches wide of the left post, then was denied by the inside of the right post later in the first half. Eventually got his goal, but missed far too many chances.

Substitutions

  • Felipe Santana
    10
    3
    3.00

    Felipe Santana

Replaced Hummels when Mainz looked down and out, so he really didn't have much to do. Conceded one free kick, but otherwise was not very much involved.

  • Antônio da Silva

    Antônio da Silva

    Appeared for five minutes.

  • Robert Lewandowski

    Robert Lewandowski

Only had 11 minutes to make his impression, but nearly scored moments before full time. He looked onside, but was called off.
