Kansas City Wizards 4-1 New England Revolution: Wizards Thrash Revs

An early brace from Birahim Diop got the home side started and they never looked back, with Kei Kamara and Jack Jewsbury capping off the rout.

The Revolution’s two-game road trip didn’t end well for them at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Saturday evening. A formation change to compensate for the smaller field dimensions failed to pay dividends as the Revs were plastered 4-1 by a rampant Kansas City side.

A first-half brace from Birahim Diop put the home team well ahead before Kenny Mansally pegged one back for the visitors. The second half, however, was all Wizards, as the hosts doubled their scoreline and condemned the Revolution to the second consecutive loss after an eight-match unbeaten run.

First Half

The opening period at CommunityAmerica Ballpark featured little in the way of quality soccer, but was hardly bereft of excitement or controversy.

After a run of sloppy play, the Wizards opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Birahim Diop. A great ball from Kei Kamara found Diop in behind the Revs defense and he made no mistake when one-on-one with Matt Reis. Diop looked offside and replays seemed to confirm this, but the flag stayed down.

The Revolution registered their first shot on goal just a minute later when Kenny Mansally got free in the area, but his left-footed half-volley was scuffed and bounded right to Jimmy Nielsen. Kei Kamara responded for the Wizards in the 19th minute with a sneaky low drive from the right side of the box, but Reis reacted well and got down to cover it.

New England mounted a threat again in the 22nd minute with a flurry of activity in the box. Ilija Stolica had a shot from just outside the 18 blocked, and his rebound found Nyassi on the right flank. The Gambian’s cross went to the far post and was headed back across by Mansally to Perovic, who teed up Khano Smith on the edge of the area. His shot was errant, however, and deflected off an offside Stolica.

Kansas City doubled their advantage in the 27th minute off of a throw-in. The toss found Kei Kamara in the Revs’ 18-yard box, and the big forward executed a deft heel fake to give himself some space at the byline. His cross was inch-perfect, planting itself right on Diop’s head. The goalscorer made no mistake and he doubled his career MLS account, beating a despairing Reis.

Frustrated, the Revolution tried to strike back through the red-hot Marko Perovic, but his low drive from 30 yards flashed just wide of Jimmy Nielsen’s left post. They found a way to pull one back in the 37th minute, though. Kenny Mansally and Khano Smith worked a good combination, and Smith’s early ball found the striker near the top of the box. The ball bounced up and Mansally struck a half-volley that deflected off Jimmy Conrad and wrong-footed Nielsen for the goal.

Second Half

Early going in the second half was stilted and ugly, as both teams failed to maintain much possession or muster a lot of good looks on goal. The Revs had the first chance of the half in the 57th minute when a long free kick found the head of Shalrie Joseph at the far post, who headed down and back to Cory Gibbs. The defender’s right-footed half-volley thundered over the crossbar.

New England appeared to be gaining momentum and controlling the run of play until the 65th minute when Kei Kamara popped up out of nowhere to restore Kansas City’s two-goal advantage. Birahim Diop broke down the right flank and sent in a teasing cross along the floor. Khano Smith couldn’t beat Kei Kamara to the ball and the Wizards striker got a toe on it to send it in with Reis helpless.

The Revolution seemed ready to respond again in the 67th minute when Ilija Stolica was set up for a good shot inside the left part of the 18. His shot was blocked, but the rebound skipped over to Cory Gibbs. He took his time and had the goal at his mercy, but Gibbs skied the ball into row Z.

The Wizards made New England pay just two minutes later when they sealed the victory with a fourth goal. Emmanuel Osei was far too casual with a back pass to Matt Reis and Ryan Smith chased it down, forcing Reis to slide in and deflect the ball away rather than clearing it. It fell to substitute Jack Jewsbury, who had an open goal to shoot for and made no mistake from the top of the D.

A flurry of substitutions and increasingly physical play bogged down the last 20 minutes of the match. Marko Perovic and Michael Harrington were lucky not to be booked when they went toe-to-toe off the ball, but Ricardo Salazar opted to give each of them a talking to rather than take action.

The two sides traded last chances before the final whistle. Sainey Nyassi made a good run to the byline in the 72nd minute but his low cross wasn’t met with anyone, and Khano Smith made a poor decision to shoot after collecting the ball on the far side, firing wide. Then in the 77th minute, Davy Arnaud’s pass found Jack Jewsbury making a diagonal run, but Matt Reis was quick off his line and smothered Jewsbury’s shot.
