WASHINGTON, D.C. -- FC Dallas' excellent league form continued Saturday night in the nation's capital, as they beat D.C. United 3-1 in front of 12,474 fans. David Ferreira gave Dallas the lead in the first half, and Eric Alexander scored his first goal of the season to extend the lead. Jair Benitez conceded a late own goal to give United their lone tally, before Jeff Cunningham rounded out the scoring in second half stoppage time.

First Half

Play was sloppy and rough to begin the first half, as neither team seemed comfortable on the field. The first chance of the game came from a foul, as Brek Shea took down Pablo Hernandez just outside the Dallas box. Left back Marc Burch tried his luck from the free kick, and forced a good save out of Dallas 'keeper Kevin Hartman.

As the game progressed, it was D.C. that had the better of the play, but they could only create a handful of good scoring chances. Danny Allsopp had a chance in the 17th minute when Hernandez played him into the box, but the Australian's shot was deflected to Hartman.

Eric Alexander had the first chance for Dallas, as he took Bill Hamid's punch from a corner at the top of the box. But from there, Alexander bounced a shot straight at Hamid, who caught the ball with danger lurking in the area.

United had a good chance to take the lead in the 28th minute, a pass finding Branko Boskovic beyond the Dallas defense. The midfielder was forced to turn his body before shooting, leaving him with a shot from a sharp angle that Hartman parried away.

A two minute sequence of events transpired starting in the 34th minute that saw Dallas take the lead. Allsopp had a brilliant chance to give United the lead, as Dallas dangerously turned the ball over in their half. Hartman stopped Allsopp's shot in an one-on-one situation.

Moments later in the 36th minute, Alexander played a wonderful pass for Shea behind the United defense. Shea drew Hamid out of his goal and then made a simple pass across the box for David Ferreira, who was also in behind the United defense. Ferreira supplied the easy finish into the empty goal, and Dallas was up 1-0.

Neither team was able to create any scoring chances in the final ten minutes of the half, and, after three minutes of stoppage time, the half ended with Dallas up one goal.

Second Half

It didn't take long Dallas to double their advantage in the second half, Alexander tallying the first goal of his MLS career. Ferreira had the ball on the left side of the United box, and passed back towards the middle. The pass found Milton Rodriguez, who laid the ball back for Alexander, who placed a shot past Hamid.

From there, Dallas was more than happy to sit back and allow D.C. to retain possession, as it was clear that United would not be able to create anything substantial.

Most of United's possession was in the midfield, but once they tried to press into the Dallas half, they would turn over the ball cheaply.

That gave Dallas a couple of chances on the counter attack, although none of those really panned out either. Jeff Cunningham did have a chance in the 65th minute, after just entering the match, but his header from Ferreira's corner was over the bar.

D.C. interim Ben Olsen manager tried everything to get his team back into the match, even throwing Chris Pontius and Adam Cristman in looking for a goal.

That goal finally came in the 80th minute, as Jair Benitez put the ball into his own net. Santino Quaranta sent a cross towards the far post looking for Andy Najar. Najar was about to connect with the cross, but Benitez intervened. However, he still sent the ball past Hartman.

Searching for the equalizer late on, United couldn't threaten Hartman's goal, as D.C. were unable to connect any passes in the final third of the field. Coupled with Dallas' ability to run the clock down, United simply were unable to create any chances that would have lead to the equalizing goal.

Cunningham then added an insurance goal in the second minute of stoppage time, as he collected a long ball in front of substitute Dejan Jakovic, and easily rounded Hamid to finish off the scoring on the night.
