Full time in Bremen and Werder have edged out Hamburg in the northern derby! A superb game that highlights the ever growing appeal of the Bundesliga. Hamburg had the better of the first half however a quick double strike from Marin and Almeida gave Werder a 2-0 lead. Van Nistelrooy and Pitroipa hauled die Rothosen back into the game however superb flowing football from Bremen got them the winner when Almeida tapped the ball home on 85 minutes. HSV had chances to equalise but it was not to be. Thanks for joining me - it's been an immense pleasure to keep you all informed about yet another Bundesliga classic. Until next time, Auf Wiedersehen.
Rost comes up for the corner and is caught as Bremen storm upfield. Marin runs forward and in a 2v1 situation, plays in Pizarro who strolls the ball up to the empty net, however he had strayed offside!!!
Yellow Card Marko Marin
Incredible drama as HSV win a last-gasp corner. What a run from Pitroipa and then Jarolim and now ROST HAS COME FORWARD!
Yellow Card Tim Wiese
Ironic cheers from the home fans as Choupo-Moting can't quite keep the ball in play down the left hand side. Wiese is in no rush to take the goal-kick and is booked for timewasting.
There are two minutes of stoppage time at the Weserstadion as the home fans prepare to celebrate another derby victory.
Another chance for Van Nistelrooy as he gets on the end of Ze Roberto's cross but the bounce of the ball is not kind to the Dutchman and he can only find Tim Wiese's bosom.
Does this game ever cease to amaze? Van Nistelrooy with what seemed like a golden chance but Mertesacker gets across to do just enough to put the striker off after another error from Proedl.
Substitution Claudio Pizarro Sandro Wagner
Thomas Schaaf elects to take off Claudio Pizarro, who did well to last so long, for Sandro Wagner for the last few minutes.
Beautifully worked goal with Wesley taking the ball from Pizarro before cutting the ball back into the path of the (again!) unmarked Hugo Almeida who slams the ball into the roof of the net to the delight of the home fans! Superb football from Werder Bremen. The HSV players appeal for offside but take nothing away from Bremen's combination football and movement.
Goal Hugo Almeida
Trochowski with a poor free-kick into the hands of Wiese sets Bremen on their way with another counter but HSV deal with it. Bremen certainly will not die wanting in this game. TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HUGO ALMEIDA!!!!
I thought Bremen had won it!! Superb run from Marin down the left but his cutback is behind Almeida and evades the Portuguese who then slumps to the ground in disappointment.
Marin now pops up over on the left but his cross is right onto the head of Jarolim who heads clear.
That is Hunt's last action and the end of his disappointing evening as he is replaced by Daniel Jensen in the Bremen midfield.
Substitution Aaron Hunt Daniel Jensen
A weak defensive header from ZeRo allows Hunt space to run at goal. However, he makes the wrong choice as with Pizarro available, he decides to go for glory but can only succeed in finding row M in the stands.
Substitution Marcell Jansen Piotr Trochowski
Trochowski comes on for the last eleven minutes or so in place of Marcell Jansen. He is now the smallest player on the field at 169cm tall, Marko Marin is 170cm, around my height no less.
Superb play from Wesley who slaloms between two defenders but Jansen recovers to even win a goal-kick off the Brazilian. HSV are about to bring on Piotr Trochowski.
Dazzling from Marko Marin who found a way past Westermann as he jinked down the right and the ball goes behind for a corner. From that corner, the unlikely figure of Silvestre has a tame shot on his weaker foot into the arms of Rost.
A fine interception from Mertesacker but then a hurried clearance into touch which keeps the pressure on the Bremen defence, not the best idea with HSV in the ascendancy. And what a chance for Choupo-Moting who beautifully evaded the challenge of Proedl before his shot strikes Mertesacker on the side and goes behind for a corner.
Demel looks as if he felt the full force of a strong Bargfrede challenge, which concedes a free-kick to HSV around 40 yards from goal. ZeRo to take as always, however he overhits it and Wiese collects. A rare blot on the veteran's copybook this evening.
Marin worms his way inside two men but can't quite get everything behind the low shot which is comfortably collected by Rost.
Another break from van Nistelrooy down the right but his cross is a touch overhit and passes over the heads of Pitroipa and Choupo-Moting.
I take it all back, Pizarro timed his run to perfection. To his credit, Guy Demel recovered his position well to assist Rost in thwarting Pizarro.
There is a hint of offside as Pizarro races in behind the HSV defence. He shapes himself to shoot but Rost makes himself big and pulls off a smothering stop, reminiscent of Peter Schmeichel in his pomp. Not the elusive 134th goal for Pizza then!
After Kacar fouls Marin, Almeida continues his penchant for long-range efforts tonight and puts it into the crowd via the aid of a deflection. Nevertheless, a goal-kick is given.
It is no less than HSV deserve as over the course of the game they have been the better side although credit to Bremen for imposing themselves on the match once they scored. Pitroipa has set up a goal and scored one - perhaps Armin Veh CAN turn things around when they aren't going well!
I ask again - why was he ever left out? Ze Roberto's corner comes out to Pitroipa on the edge of the box and he finds the top corner with unerring accuracy!!! Wiese had no chance - a stunning right-foot strike from the Burkina Faso winger. What a difference he has made!!
Goal Jonathan Pitroipa
TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR SUPERSUB JONATHAN PITROIPA!
Credit to Van Nistelrooy - he got the little bit of luck that has been lacking in the last few games as he has continually plugged away and worked hard (contrary to his unfair reputation as a shirker) and finally he gets his just rewards. It's been a day for former Real Madrid strikers with both Raul and Huntelaar scoring for Schalke earlier against Gladbach.
A lightning burst of pace from Pitroipa enables him to break into the penalty box on the right hand side and this time Van Nistelrooy does find the net with a clever backheel which richochets off Mertesacker and over the line! Terrible challenge from Proedl but Pitroipa has continued from where he left off in midweek and justified Veh's decision to bring him on - but then why was he ever left out?

Goal Ruud Van Nistelrooy
TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR VAN NISTELROOY!!! HSV BACK IN THE GAME!
It has to be said that the presence of Mertesacker in the Bremen back four has given a new found confidence to the home side. He may have his critics but when all is said and done, he is a top class centre-half who is a real leader at the back. And all that in spite of having to play with what has to be an uncomfortable protective mask.
Somewhat surprisingly the HSV fans are chanting the name of Armin Veh professing their support for the title-winning manager at Stuttgart.
Proedl gives the ball away to HSV in the centre-circle allowing die Rothosen to launch another attack. Jansen looks for the run of ZeRo but Wesley gets a foot to it and the ball goes out for a throw.
Hamburg make a change, bringing on Jonathan Pitroipa, so impressive against Wolfsburg and a surprise omission, for Eljero Elia.
Substitution Eljero Elia Jonathan Pitroipa
Marin's corner is not the best, unlike some of his touches and bits of skill tonight, and is headed away by Westermann.
Another midfield battle between Frings and Jarolim leads to a Bremen free-kick although both had their feet danging high in the air as they both uncompromisingly went for the ball. From the free-kick Almeida gets around the back and wins a corner off Rost.
Wesley puts in an excellent cross from the right which is headed away. Bremen come again, this time from the other side and Almeida flicks the ball across goal and harmlessly wide.
Hugo Almeida tries a long range effort on his own, which does not prove to be the worst but it lands narrowly wide of Frank Rost in the HSV goal.
Marcell Jansen volleys towards goal from outside the box and an excellent save from Tim Wiese as he dives across to tip the ball behind. Unfortunately his encore from the corner is not quite as accurate, to be kind to the German international!
Elia wins a corner down the left off Wesley who is deputising at rightback after Frintz went off injured before the interval.
Substitution Tomás Eduardo Rincón Gojko Kacar
Hamburg get us underway in the second half as they try to claw back this two goal deficit and salvage at least a point from this northern derby.
Hamburg have made one change at the break, bringing on Gojko Kacar for Tomas Rincon in midfield. Bremen are unchanged.
Half-time in the northern derby and it has not been a happy time for HSV in their 1600th Bundesliga encounter. Despite having the better of the play, they once again find themselves behind. Marko Marin's chip was forced over the line by a combination of Demel and Ze Roberto to give Bremen the lead against the run of play. Not long after Hugo Almeida headed in a Marin free-kick to double the Werder lead. 2-0 at half-time. Join me shortly for the second period.
Outstanding work from van Nistelrooy whose sheer dogged persistence allowed him to wriggle away from three defenders including the presence of Frings and he hits the ball towards goal but it drifts past the far post with Marcell Jansen not quite able to keep up with play.
Substitution Clemens Fritz Philipp Bargfrede
Bargfrede replaces Clemens Fritz who looks to have sustained an injury and he is shaking his head as he walks off.
Bremen are preparing a change before the break with Philipp Bargfrede shedding his tracksuit and getting ready to come on.
Ze Roberto is having a stormer tonight but still Hamburg can't find the back of the net. Mertesacker comes in strongly on Van Nistelrooy but wins the ball cleanly in the opinion of referee Kinghofer.
Hamburg are getting plenty of joy down the left. Jansen puts in another wicked ball but Proedl gets in just in time ahead of Van Nistelrooy and skies the ball clear.
Almeida tries a fancy dragback but he can only find Westermann. Werder get the ball back and Proedl looks for Marin but it's too strong and through to Demel. Hamburg have been the better passing side this evening but it's ultimately the scoreline that counts.
Yellow Card Tomás Eduardo Rincón
Rincon is booked for a full-blooded challenge on Frings where he came sliding in front on and he was never not going to be punished.
Yellow Card Eljero Elia
Marin delivers the free-kick in towards Almeida but this time Heiko Westermann does head the ball clear. Incredible how Almeida, known for his aerial prowess, was unmarked in the lead up to the second goal, especially from a set-piece.
Elia receives a deserved booking after he tracked back and pushed Wesley over.
If the first goal was perhaps undeserved, the second was justice for a rather rough decision against die Gruen-Weissen. Now the Bremen fans are doing the conga in the stands! What an atmosphere!
Assist Aaron Hunt
Goal Hugo Almeida
Moments after Bremen are denied what should have been a penalty after Rost's challenge on Marin, a free-kick into the Hamburg box is met by Hugo Almeida who powerfully heads the ball into the net past Rost.
TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR HUGO ALMEIDA 2-0 BREMEN!!
Demel gets drawn too far inside allowing Marin the space on the left-hand side. Marin chips the ball into the centre, it deflects off Demel, which causes the ball to loop over a now stranded Rost and Ze Roberto slides in to help the ball over the line. A fortunate goal, also against the run of play. It's happened again to Hamburg after they battered Wolfsburg only to lose!
Own Goal Guy Demel
Assist Marko Marin
TORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR BREMEN Marko Marin gives Bremen the lead with a great deal of fortune!!
I'm not sure if I am more surprised that Ruud did not score or that Ruud didn't react with more disbelief at not scoring! Demel gives away a free-kick for bundling over Pizarro, much to the Ivorian's disbelief. Marin's effort is headed towards goal weakly by Mertesacker and Rost collects.
How did HSV not score? Jansen with a perfectly-timed run to latch onto ZeRo's through ball and his pinpoint cross is somehow not put in by Van Nistelrooy who did get contact on the ball but not enough to divert the ball home. Excellent attack though from HSV.
HSV have a free-kick 25 yards out as Frings brought down Elia and it's an excellent spot for ZeRo to utilise his brilliant left foot. However, I gave him the kiss of death and he shanks the set-piece wide.
Excellent counter from Bremen. Fritz did well to toe the ball out to Wesley and he wins a corner for the home side. Marin finds Pizarro at the back post and it's a superb leap from the Peruvian but his direction was not quite as good.
Great play from van Nistelrooy to get down the right and cross but his ball could not quite find Marcell Jansen and Fritz's sliding clearance goes out for a throw.
Very, very poor play from Elia who had Jansen and Van Nistelrooy either side of him but he tries to do too much and runs into trouble. The veteran striker van Nistelrooy had taken up a superb position on the shoulder of the Bremen defence.
HSV have begun the better of the two sides and are playing the ball about nicely. As I say that, excellent ball forward from Rincon to Jansen and his cross is well taken by Wiese as the ball dips in front of the Bremen keeper.
Ze Roberto dinks the free-kick to the back stick looking for Van Nistelrooy but Mertesacker has him covered and he does enough to enable the ball to pass over the two competing players and out of play.
Wesley slides in on Elia and catches the Dutchman with his left leg to ensure his progress is halted. Free-kick HSV.
Marcell Jansen is flagged offside as he mistimed his run after excellent work from Ze Roberto who won the ball back and then threaded a fine ball through an array of Bremen bodies.
Mertesacker strides forward and looks for fellow returnee Pizarro but a combination of Rincon and Mathijsen dispossess the tall Peruvian.
A rare misplaced ball from Marin who got too much on his pass out to the right looking for Fritz.
Mikael Silvestre allows the ball to go behind the goal-line for a goal kick to Bremen. He will be hoping for a better performance this evening as he struggled against Hannover. First-choice Sebastian Boenisch will be out for between 4 and 6 months after he had knee surgery.
Ze Roberto's devilish delivery causes problems in the Bremen defence but when Choupo-Moting flicks it on, Van Nistelrooy is offside.
Demel embarks upon his first burst forward but his ball forward looking for Choupo-Moting is cut out. Frings concedes a free-kick for a trip on Jarolim who reacts less angrily than he did in last week's Hamburger derby!
It's been a quiet start to this game with both sides looking to feel their way into proceedings.HSV have shaken up their side with Ze Roberto pushed back to leftback with Rincon playing in midfield after a couple of games at rightback in place of Guy Demel, who keeps his spot. Elia comes back in for Petric who disappointed in midweek, a couple of fine free-kicks aside.
If Pizarro scores on his return to the side, he will become the all-time foreign topscorer in the Bundesliga. He is currently tied on 133 goals with Bayern legend Giovane Elber. However, the word is he is not yet fit to complete a full 90 minutes.
Thomas Schaaf is delighted to welcome back Per Mertesacker, sporting a mask after suffering a fracture to his eye socket and Claudio Pizarro. Bremen kick us off and we're underway.
A run down of the two teams. Werder Bremen: Wiese - Fritz, Proedl, Mertesacker, Silvestre - Frings - Wesley, Hunt - Marin - Pizarro, Hugo Almeida. Hamburg: Rost - Demel, Westermann, Mathijsen, Ze Roberto - Rincon, Jarolim - Choupo-Moting, Elia, Jansen - Van Nistelrooy
Welcome to Goal.com's live commentary of the 93rd northern derby between Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV from the Weserstadion in the north of Germany. Neither side have won in their last three games. Hamburg dominated Wolfsburg in midweek but went down 3-1 at the Imtech Arena while Bremen lost 4-1 in Hannover in another derby.
