Les Gones put ASNL to the sword with a fine performance at the Stade Gerland...
This was a remarkable fixture, in which there were plenty of talking points throughout, not least goals from Yoann Gourcuff, Jeremy Pied and Miralem Pjanic, which ultimately proved more than enough for Lyon to take the points. In the last minute of the match, Jimmy Briand scored a contender for goal of the season with a stunning bicycle kick.
From the outset it was clear that the hosts would control this fixture as they created a packet of chances but ultimately failed to test Damien Gregorini, with Briand the biggest culprit in front of goal.
When Jeremy Toulalan’s lofted pass was volleyed impressively into the net by Gourcuff, the guests couldn’t complain about the deficit they faced.
On the stroke of half-time, Nancy had an unexpected chance to get back into the match after a clumsy challenge on Youssouf Hadji by OL stand-in goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre. As if forgiven by the attacker, Vercoutre was able to field the Moroccan’s embarrassing failed 'Panenka' whilst almost in a sitting position.
Lyon continued to threaten after the break. Bafetimbi Gomis had a goal controversially disallowed for taking an indirect free kick from just outside the six yard box too early, while Briand had a shot off the post roll right along the line and into the gloves of Gregorini.
Substitute Pied eventually provided the second goal, sending a neat glancing header into the net following a Briand cross from the right.
Nancy offered little as an attacking threat in the second half, and les Gones really cut loose in the closing stages. With four minutes left on the clock, a positive run from Michel Bastos was rewarded when Pjanic bustled his way by one challenge before finishing deftly by the static Gregorini.
But Lyon saved their best for last, Briand rocketing a terrific bicycle kick into the net after a cross from Anthony Reveillere.
What could have been a tricky match leading into Real Madrid on Tuesday proved something of a cakewalk for Lyon, who will approach their fixture against los Blancos with renewed confidence after some decidedly questionable performances in recent weeks.
