Olympique Lyonnais 2–2 Paris Saint-Germain: Embarrassing Apoula Edel Error Hands OL A Point
Les Parisiens were denied top spot in Ligue 1 due to a woeful error from their custodian...
By Robin Bairner
An amateurish error from Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Apoula Edel presented ten-man Olympique Lyonnais with a point at the Stade Gerland in a dramatic Ligue 1 encounter that ended 2-2.
The guests were leading 2-1 with four minutes left on the clock when Apoula completely fluffed a kick from hand, allowing Bafetimbi Gomis a free run on goal to lash home an equaliser that crowned a pulsating encounter, though Stephane Sessegnon missed a fabulous late chance to win the game for Antoine Kombouare's side.
After a scoreless first half, in which the hosts were the more enterprising side, Lyon moved into the lead early in the second period. Allowed to play some neat passing football around the PSG box, les Gones unlocked the visiting rearguard thanks to a fine pass from Kim Kallstrom, which was smacked into the net by the over-lapping Aly Cissokho.
OL’s lead lasted only a few minutes. Claude Makelele unhinged the home defence, releasing Guillaume Hoarau down the left channel, from where his driven cross was headed into an empty net by Nene.
With 10 minutes remaining, a clumsy challenge on the Brazilian left-winger from Cissokho yielded a penalty to les Parisiens and a red card for the left-back. Hoarau clinically dispatched the kick into the top corner of the net, but it wasn’t enough to give PSG the victory due to their 'keeper's incompetence.
For much of the opening 45 minutes Lyon had chipped at les Parisiens’ rearguard without a great deal of luck. Michel Bastos was a problematic presence on the right wing, and his low curling shot after 13 minutes drew a decent diving stop from Apoula.
Neither goalkeeper would be especially stretched in the opening half. Efforts directed toward the goal of les Rouge et Bleu were frequent, but Lyon were struggling to find the target.
Bastos continued to show a terrific appetite even when OL were toiling. A viciously swerving second half free kick was parried away by the visiting custodian, who could only watch as Dejan Lovren headed wide on the follow up. The Armenian international also had to look sharp to tip over a deft lob from Gomis, who was enjoying a good game in attack.
Les Parisiens posed a significant threat on the break throughout but too often allowed their promising positions to go awry, ultimately costing the capital side the opportunity to top the league at the culmination of the weekend.
