Olympique de Marseille 2-0 Lorient: Gabriel Heinze & Taye Taiwo Strike As OM Sneak The Points
Les Phoceens recorded their first win of the season thanks to a couple of goals from their full-backs...
By Robin Bairner
Olympique de Marseille put their difficult recent spell behind them by claiming a 2-0 victory over Lorient - their first Ligue 1 win of the season.
Reeling from a variety of events in recent weeks, OM got off to the perfect start thanks to Gabriel Heinze’s sixth minute goal. Andre Ayew’s thumping downward header from a Hilton cross was well blocked by Lionel Cappone, but the Argentine was on hand to smash home from six yards.
Taye Taiwo’s stunning left footed drive from the left corner of the box took a slight deflection en route to the net in the 72nd minute to seal the points.
Only a couple of minutes earlier, Heinze thought he had put the game safe. The Argentine stretched to touch home a Lucho Gonzalez free kick, though the assistant referee’s flag was correctly raised to chop off what had appeared to be a second goal for les Phoceens.
Moments later, prior to OM’s second, Kevin Gameiro charged in on Steve Mandanda’s goal as Marseille’s defence was caught cold, though he overlooked Fabrice Robert and had his angled drive blocked.
It was duel that had been played out several times over the evening. Mandanda made a fine save from the striker when he broke clear five minutes before the break, having watched a good drive from the FCL striker fly not too far wide moments previously.
Just as Mandanda won his personal battle, Marseille won the war. Victory was a welcome tonic for Marseille after a tough week, with the champions finally off and running in their defence of the Ligue 1 title, picking up their first points of the season.
