Lille 0-0 PSG: Les Dogues Play Out Entertaining Draw With Les Parisiens
Lille and PSG played out an entertaining stalemate tonight ...
By Vasil Kotsev
This fiery Ligue 1 clash certainly lived up to the expectations as both teams had their chances, but neither managed to break the deadlock.
The game started scrappily with early yellow cards for Macros Ceara (14) and Nene (19) as neither team was able to create anything of note. Lille were the more active of the two teams with Eden Hazard and Gervinho occasionally going on fine runs in PSG's penalty area. There were chances for Tulio De Melo (20, 22) and Hazard (24), but neither of them managed to open the scoring.
Nene and Ceara were combining well for PSG on the left wing, but could not forge a clear-cut chance for PSG. Mevlut Erdinc went close the visitors with a header in the 33rd minute, but the ball fizzled inches wide of Mickael Landreau's left post. Nene had a stinging shot saved by Landreau minutes before the break, which proved to be the last chance for both sides in the first half.
Lille stepped it up a gear in the second half as Erdinc had a chance to score just after the restart, but his header sailed over the bar. Hazard waved his magic wand in the 53rd minute, when he turned Christophe Jallet inside and out on the left flank before crossing for Gervinho, but the Ivorian could not control the ball inside the penalty box and the chance went begging.
Nene had the crowd on their feet as he first forced Landreau into a fine save from a free-kick midway through the second-half before almost scoring directly from the resulting corner. The best chance of the game fell to Guillaume Hoarau in the 71st minute, but the French international could not slot home in a one-on-one with Landreau and the game ended in a draw.
After today's draw PSG climb to fourth in the standings and host Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday. Lille, on the other hand, drop to thirteenth position in the league and travel to SC Vaslui in another Europa League play-off on Thursday.
