River Plate 3-2 Independiente: Funes Mori Double Fires River To The Top
The youngster scored his second and third of the season in a memorable first half, as the Millonarios finally show glimpses of the 'Tiki Tiki'...
By Daniel Edwards
A double strike from 19-year-old Rogelio Funes Mori fired River Plate to a clasico victory over Independiente, as the Millonarios came out 3-2 winners in an intriguing game at the Monumental and stay joint-top with Velez Sarsfield. The defeat means the Rojos only have one point from their first three encounters, piling more pressure on the shoulders of new coach Dany Garnero
After starting the season in subdued albeit winning form, Angel Cappa’s River side finally burst into life with an electrifying first half of football. Showing some smart touches in the middle of the field and with Manuel Lanzini proving an able replacement for suspended Ariel Ortega, River were rewarded with a goal after just nine minutes.
A Millonario corner was cleared only as far as Roberto Pereyra, and his cross-shot landed straight in the path of Funes Mori, who made no mistake from six yards out. Cappa’s side then showed too much confidence in the game, and were punished with a Rojo equaliser. Diego Buonanotte was caught in possession by Mareque, and the full back released Silvera with a beautiful cross field ball behind the defence. The striker made no mistake in firing the ball past goalkeeper Carrizo to level up things.
The tie however lasted all of one minute, as River came out firing once more. Funes Mori scored his third of the season so far to restore the lead, although he was undoubtedly in an offside position when the ball was played through. And the teams had barely reached midway through the half when Paulo Ferrari doubled the home lead, sending a packed Monumental into raptures after a great ball from Buonanotte. German Pacheco and Gracian both went close to closing the gap, but the half finished with River in a commanding position.
After an exhilarating first period both teams went on autopilot for the second; Pacheco had a couple of half chances to score his first in Argentine football, while Funes Mori also could have secured a hat trick with a little more composure in front of goal. With less than a minute remaining on the clock however an unlucky own goal from River keeper Carrizo secured a second for Independiente after Federico Mancuello's strike, meaning a few nervous minutes for the home team. 3-2 it stayed however, leaving the River fans on their feet and dreaming of an Angelito-inspired return to the big time.
