Pre-Season 2010: Tottenham Hotspur 1-4 Villarreal - Ruthless Rossi Puts Redknapp's Spurs To The Sword
Italian nets hat-trick at White Hart Lane...
By Josh Kerslake
A hat-trick from Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi condemned Tottenham Hotspur to their first pre-season defeat of the summer in front of a healthy crowd at White Hart Lane.
Rossi scored twice in the first half and despite Giovani Dos Santos getting one back for the hosts, the Italian sealed his hat-trick midway through the second half to seal the victory for the Spanish side, before Ruben added a fourth late on.
To add to the poor result, Jermaine Jenas limped off after just 18 minutes to give Harry Redknapp an injury worry going into the new season.
Both sides sent out strong sides for this enticing friendly, but it was the Spaniards flowing football that got the best of their London opponents as they scored twice in the opening half.
After keeping out efforts from David Fuster and Santi Cazorla respectively, Heurelho Gomes in the Spurs goal could do nothing to prevent Rossi from giving the yellow submarine the lead on 22 minutes.
A neat passing move involving Bruno Soriano and Cazorla was rounded off by Rossi who drilled the ball low and across Gomes into the far corner.
It was two soon after, with the second a carbon copy of Rossi’s first. This time Marcos Senna unlocked the Spurs defence and after his pass left Michael Dawson helpless, Rossi again got the better of Gomes with a low shot into the net.
Spurs made seven changes at half time in an attempt to get back into the match, one of those substitutes Niko Kranjcar thought he had got a goal back on 55 minutes, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
The home side did get the breakthrough on 56 minutes, when Peter Crouch slid the ball into the path of Giovani Dos Santos who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
This was Rossi's night though and the former Manchester United man completed his hat-trick against the run of play, when his speculative shot deflected off Vedran Corluka leaving substitute goalkeeper David Button helpless.
Villarreal grabbed their fourth when Ruben slid in to convert Valero's cross in the closing stages.
Tottenham: Gomes; Hutton, Dawson, Corluka, Naughton; Lennon, Huddlestone (Parrett 77), Jenas (Rose 18), Kranjcar (Taarabt 79); Keane, Defoe.
All the goals from Tottenham 1-4 Villarreal.
