West Ham 2-2 West Brom: Parker Thunderbolt Can't Inspire Win As Ibanez Header Leaves Hammers Bottom

By James Daly at Upton Park

A Pablo Ibanez header resuced a point for West Brom and piled the misery on West Ham, who are left bottom of the Premier League after a 2-2 draw.

The early running came from the home side and it was the rejuvenated Kieron Dyer who was at the heart of it, skipping past a couple of challenges but putting too much purchase on his ball through to Carlton Cole. Luis Boa Morte was guilty of similar wastage a few minutes later when his pass to Pablo Barrerra was woefully placed.

But the Hammers had their tails up and soon earned a corner through good work from Dyer again, but no-one can could capitalise on Scott Parker's whipped ball. Slowly, though, that positivity from the home side began to ebb away.

No-one will be surprised to discover it was Parker who was controlling the play in the middle of the park, but while his passes were neat and precise, his team-mates were guilty of some slack play, giving the ball away all too easily to the perky Baggies. The first 20 minutes could be summed up in one sound: a loud groan.

It took another two minutes before West ham had their first shot on goal. Cole was played in beautifully by Barrera and the Hammers No.9 dragged his shot wide from the left-hand corner of the box. Down the other end Brunt's inswinging free-kick was met by the head of Pablo Ibanez, but he couldn't direct it on target.

Robert Green then had to be on his toes a few minutes later to turn another Brunt fee-kick, this time from the right of the box, around the post as the Baggies winger fired in a cruel, bouncing shot.

The game flowed this way and that, like a choppy tide, although it was the home fans feeling sea sick on 38-minutes when Reid was hauled down by Boa Morte in the area and referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot. Gasps of disbelief echoed from the home end, but it mattered little as Peter Odemwingie stepped up confidently and sent Green the wrong way to open the scoring.

But the home fans had something to cheer about five minutes later when, who else, but Parker took matters into his own hands and rifled in a shot from fully 30-yards, that arrowed across goal and into Carson's top right hand corner, giving the Baggies keeper no chance.

And that goal lifted the home side, as Danny Gabbidon nodded a ball from a corner right at Carson, before Brunt broke and whipped a left-foot shot wide, as the game erupted into end-to-end stuff just before the break.

Boa Morte had the last chance of the half, turning expertly in the area but smashing his shot right at Carson as the first period drew to a close.

The second half started in the perfect way for the home side as Dean awarded another penalty, this time for a Tamas push on Dyer, and Frederique Piquionne dispatched from 12 yards with ease.

The home side pressed further and after should have extended their lead on 62 minutes when a lovely flick from Dyer found Piquionne, but he dragged his shot wide from 15-yards.

The Baggies weren't to be outdone, though, and fired off yet more shots on goal with substitute Simon Cox and Odemwingie both having efforts, the former lashing wide and the latter stinging the gloves of Green. And that pressure paid off as the Baggies equalised with 25 minutes to go, an unmarked Ibanez heading home Brunt's cross from the left.

More balls into the box continued to cause confusion and Green had to be alert to jump on a loose ball as the Hammers defence lost themselves minutes later.

There were worried murmurs when Cole hobbled off with an injury midway through the second half, but those turned to cheers with the emergence of Victor Obinna. The on loan forward is certainly a favourite here and he was right into the action, with a few twists and turns but couldn't find a team-mate on the egde of the box.

Frustration echoed around Upton Park as the minutes wound down and despite a half-hearted shout for a penalty when Reid blocked Barrerra the home side ran out of ideas.

The result leaves West Ham bottom of the table and with Upton Park tube station closed, home fans embarked on a long, subdued journey home.
