Premier League Preview: Blackburn Rovers - Wigan Athletic

By Danny Hart

Relegation Dogfight

Of course it’s still far too early to predict who will be fighting it out at the bottom of the table come the end of the season, but it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see either of these two sides battling against relegation.

Blackburn are currently 18th in the Premier League and manager Sam Allardyce has admitted his side’s results simply haven’t been good enough, despite some impressive displays so far this term. Meanwhile Wigan, who began the season in disastrous style after conceding 10 goals in their first two games, sit in 17th place but have seen their results pick up in recent games, most notably with a 1-0 win over Tottenham away, a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United and a 2-0 win over 10-man Wolves at home.

Fortress Ewood?

Although Blackburn have struggled at home this season - they are without a win in their last four games on their own turf - they have an impressive record against Wigan over the last few years. They are unbeaten in their last seven matches against the Latics, winning six of them.

But Wigan have had success against Blackburn in recent times, although not at Ewood Park. In a remarkable game at the JJB Stadium back in 2007, Roque Santa Cruz scored a hat-trick for the visitors but still ended up on the losing side, as a hat-trick from Marcus Bent and goals from Denny Landzaat and Paul Scharner secured a 5-3 win for the Latics.

TEAM NEWS

Blackburn Rovers

Gael Givet looks set to miss out for the hosts after picking up a foot injury in the 2-1 loss at home to Chelsea last week.

Keith Andrews has been out of action for the majority of the season so far with a groin problem and he looks unlikely to make his return this weekend.

Meanwhile, Benjani is ready to continue in attack despite concerns over his fitness this season and Steven Nzonzi is expected to return from a hamstring injury.

Possible starting XI: Robinson; Salgado, Samba, Nelsen, Olsson; Emerton, Jones, Pedersen; M Diouf, Benjani, E Diouf.

Wigan Athletic

Emmerson Boyce will miss out again for the Latics with a pulled hamstring, but he’s expected to be back in action within 10 days.

It’s been confirmed that young midfielder James McCarthy will be out of action for two months after having surgery on his injured ankle, but he was never in contention to feature.

Roberto Martinez has no other absentees for the clash at Ewood Park, though, and looks set to prefer Ali Al-Habsi in goal ahead of Chris Kirkland once again.

Possible starting XI: Al-Habsi; Stam, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa; Thomas, Diame; N’Zogbia, Cleverley, Rodallega; Di Santo.

The main man to look out for in Sam Allardyce’s side will be El-Hadji Diouf. The former Liverpool man didn’t exactly have a great start to life in England at Anfield, with Jamie Carragher claiming he was one of the worst players he had ever seen at the club.

However, the former Senegal international seems to perform at his best under Sam Allardyce. He was a key part of the manager’s plans during their days at Bolton Wanderers and is now a permanent fixture in the Blackburn team. He gave Branislav Ivanovic and the rest of the Chelsea defence a few problems last week and Wigan will need to keep a close eye on him.

Charles N’Zogbia received boos when he played early on in the season, following remarks over the summer that he was looking to leave the club. A move to Birmingham City fell through reportedly due to the player’s wage demands but he is now starring for the Latics again.

The 24-year-old has once again reiterated his desire to leave the club but is at least proving his worth before his expected January departure. He’s now grabbed three goals in all competitions this season and even won his first France cap against Norway in August.
