Player Ratings: Wolves 2-1 Manchester City

By Nick Price at Molineux

    Marcus Hahnemann

Fortunate that Milner could only nod wide after completely misreading a first half cross, but made a terrific save from Silva to preserve the lead.

  • Kevin Foley

    3.00

    Kevin Foley

It was from his flank that Boateng fed through Silva in the build up to the penalty, but grew in confidence and his cross caused havoc in the box to take it to 2-1 and thrust forward to great effect.

  • Richard Stearman

    3.50

    Richard Stearman

Will have nightmares about the needless challenge on Silva that handed City a penalty, but recovered well with a solid second half outing.

  • Christophe Berra
    16

    3.50

    Christophe Berra

Contended well with Adebayor and led the line with confidence in the absence of veteran partner Jody Craddock.

  • Stephen Ward
    8
    4
    3.50

    Stephen Ward

The versatile defender did a capable job at left-back, and then a steady one at left-wing as McCarthy shuffled his pack to consolidate a slender lead.

  • Stephen Hunt
    7
    3
    3.50

    Stephen Hunt

All action as usual for the Irishman, who perhaps should have done better to meet a whipped Jarvis cross at the far post to give his side the lead with the score at 1-1. Replaced by George Elokobi as he visibly tired, but a solid display.

  • David Edwards
    13
    3
    3.50

    David Edwards

Scored the winner after anticipating Hart's save and calmly slotting in. Hit the post with a glancing first half header and competed well in the centre of midfield throughout.

  • Karl Henry
    9
    1
    3.00

    Karl Henry

Club captain returned from suspension but struggled to keep up with the clever movement of Silva in the first half. An important part of a late rearguard display that ensured victory.

  • Nenad Milijas
    54
    0
    3.50

    Nenad Milijas

Serbian midfielder marked his second league start of the season with a cracking equaliser, perfectly hit from outside the area.

  • Matthew Jarvis

Matthew Jarvis Top of the Match

Amongst the more talented Englishman yet to be capped for his country, the winger was a menace throughout, delivering consistently top drawer crosses and causing problems for both Boateng and Richards.

  • Kevin Doyle
    18
    2
    3.50

    Kevin Doyle

Started up front on his own but it was at the back where he made his most vital contribution of the first half, hacking away a Richards header at the far post. Terrific work-rate and hold-up play provided a valuable out ball to ease the burden as City threw men forwards in search of an equaliser.

Substitutions

  • Michael Mancienne

    Michael Mancienne

Replaced goalscorer Milijas and did a steady job of stopping City through the middle.

  • Steven Mouyokolo

    Steven Mouyokolo

Brought on with just minutes remaining.

  • George Elokobi

    2.50

    George Elokobi

Came on for the tired Hunt but was bamboozled by the quick feet of Adam Johnson.

  • Joe Hart
    7
    10
    3.00

    Joe Hart

Had precious little to do but make a couple of rudimentary saves and pick the ball out of the net for the two goals.

  • Micah Richards
    7
    10
    2.50

    Micah Richards

Saw a header from a corner cleared off the far post by Doyle, but looked troubled by the trickery of Jarvis throughout. Taken off with just over 10 minutes to go.

  • Kolo Toure
    7
    11
    3.00

    Kolo Toure

A largely commanding performance from the captain, but his hesitancy allowed Edwards to pounce.

  • Vincent Kompany
    5
    11
    3.00

    Vincent Kompany

The Belgian defender should have done better to block the path of Milijas's goal, but was, by and large, cool under pressure.

  • Jerome Boateng
    11
    13
    3.00

    Jerome Boateng

His perfect pass to Silva allowed the Spaniard the space to win the penalty, but the German had a mixed first half on the backfoot, allowing Hunt to get the wrong side of him and fortunate that the Irishman failed to connect. Ended up playing in three different positions, and did well enough in each.

  • Yaya Touré
    8
    11
    3.00

    Yaya Touré

Comfortable first half for the Ivorian, who saw little of the ball, but grew in stature in the second, easily outshining Barry.

  • Gareth Barry
    23
    19
    2.50

Gareth Barry Flop of the Match

An almost anonymous display capped off a week to forget for the 29-year-old, who played like a man with a hangover and was unsurprisingly hauled off in the second half.

  • James Milner
    8
    10
    3.00

    James Milner

Typical industry and willingness from the England man, who swung in an early cross for Balotelli that a braver striker would have nodded home. The former Villa man himself should have scored from a free header, and was largely ineffective in the second half.

  • David Silva
    38
    8
    3.50

    David Silva

The Spanish livewire earned the penalty, from which Adebayor would open the scoring, with a deft touch that had Stearman fooled and popped up in numerous positions to offer his team-mates relief in tricky spots.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor
    27
    9
    3.50

    Emmanuel Adebayor

Starting in the absence of club captain and topscorer Carlos Tevez, the former Arsenal man got going with a surging run on the counter and linked well with Balotelli. Coolly slotted away the penalty. Inexplicably subbed for Pablo Zabaleta when City needed to score.

  • Mario Balotelli
    20
    17
    3.00

    Mario Balotelli

Missed a near post chance in the early stages of the game but showed speed of mind and of foot as he outfoxed Berra before unleashing a strike from just outside the area that flew narrowly over. There's a touch of frustrated genius about the Italian, who showed glimpses of both brilliance and youthful stupidity, which should have culminated in a yellow for persistent petulance.

Substitutions

  • Pablo Zabaleta
    4
    9
    2.50

    Pablo Zabaleta

Came on for Adebayor with 15 minutes remaining to play at left-back and got himself in the book after a rash challenge on the halfway line.

  • Adam Johnson
    30
    7
    3.50

    Adam Johnson

Made an instant impact by keeping Wolves on the backfoot down the left with some jinking runs.

  • Jô
    7
    6
    3.00

Replaced Richards and led the line in the final stages.
