Dortmund 0-2 Leverkusen: Ruthless Werkself Trump Lacklustre Hosts
Leverkusen applied pressure for barely more than five minutes, but that was enough time to score two goals and earn three points.
By Clark Whitney
In-form Europa League hopefuls Dortmund and Leverkusen faced off today on a rainy day in the Ruhr valley, and it was the visitors who came up the better team. Dortmund looked bright at the start, but Leverkusen were sharper and were well on their way to victory after quickfire first-half goals from wingers Tranquillo Barnetta and Renato Augusto.
Red-hot Dortmund playmaker Shinji Kagawa forced an excellent save from Rene Adler early in the match, but Leverkusen then enjoyed a sublime spell. Eren Derdiyok's long-ranged blast deflected off the woodwork before Tranquillo Barnetta finished from a fine set-up by Arturo Vidal.
Dortmund tried to counter, but Sebastian Kehl's headed goal was controversially disallowed for offside, and seconds later, Renato Augusto played a lovely one-two with Derdiyok and fired in a splendid goal.
After the goals, Dortmund had no trouble winning possession but struggled to create chances to score. Leverkusen survived a sustained spell of pressure to enter the halftime break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
After the break, Leverkusen went into a strictly conservative mode, and had plenty of success. Nuri Sahin's free kick forced an excellent save on 57 minutes, but Dortmund's next chance did not come until the 80th minute when Marcel Schmelzer tested Adler with a long-ranged blast.
The result will be a bit discouraging for Dortmund ahead of this week's Europa League play-off with Tavriya Symferopol. Leverkusen, who thrashed weaker opponents in the last week, will take comfort in the fact that they retained their form against their talented rivals.
