Throw-ins failed to unsettle Ferdinand and Vidic, and on the ball he was poor throughout, but a willing tracker. Should have gone in the book for a petulant hack on Nani.
Smartly read a through ball and raced off his line to swipe it away from danger before Berbatov could strike, but should arguably have done better to pad away Hernandez's header.
Had a lot to contend with as he lined up directly against the advanced Evra, and was caught napping when United countered in the first half.
Did well to hook away an Evra cross that had 'goal' written all over it with Berbatov sliding in. Looked the more composed of Stoke's centre-back pair, but failed to utilise his aerial prowess in attacking positions.
Replaced the suspended Dean Whitehead in the middle of the park, making only his second start for Stoke since signing from Portsmouth in the summer. The youngster showed signs of confidence with some silky moves, but his distribution wasn't so assured and he failed to get going in the second.
Outpaced and outthought by Nani on more than one occasion in the first half, the Welshman also carelessly misread a hopeful punt into the corner that gifted Berbatov a chance. Went into the book after a nasty stab at Nani's shin and replaced by Higginbotham.
Confused O'Shea by switching flanks with Pennant early on and intelligently fed through Walters down the channel. Had Neville nervous whenever he ran at him after reverting to the left, but struggled to get out of the blocks in the second half.
Tracked back, down both flanks, with gusto and doubled up on both Nani and Evra. The former Liverpool man has recently expressed his determination to break into the England squad, but he'll have to do more than just huff and puff to impress Fabio Capello. Swapped for Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Failed to live up to his reputation of relishing encounters against the top sides. Hardly saw the ball as he was uncharacteristically beaten in the air.
Wasted an early chance to cross for Jones when under little pressure and kept quiet throughout a frustrating performance. Unsurprisingly hauled off for Tuncay.
E. van der Sar
Had little to do but did what he had to with the minimum of fuss, though his kicking was suspect at times. Powerless to stop Tuncay's wonder strike.
Commanding as ever, the Serbian's header across the face of goal set up Hernandez for the opener.
The Frenchman, playing in a midfield role, failed to make much of an impact going forward but ably supported O'Shea by doubling up on Pennant. Fortunate not to be booked for simulation after tumbling in the box. Moved to left-back following the introduction of Carrick and teed up Hernandez's second.
Starting at left-back, the Irishman was caught out by Etherington early on as the jet-heeled winger started on the right flank and his distribution from the back left a lot to be desired, but he did improve in the second and kept Pennant quiet.
Contended well with the aerial threat of Jones and rarely looked troubled. A comfortable display.
Very much struggled against the tricky Etherington, and saw a warranted yellow for a reckless challenge on the former West Ham man. Hugely fortunate not to pick up a second yellow for a similar foul. Sensibly replaced at the restart.
Quietly efficient, the veteran schemer kept the ball ticking whenever he was afforded time to do so, but it was he who lost possession to give Tuncay the chance to equalise. Subbed off to wind down the clock.
A measured through ball nearly released Berbatov for the first chance of the game. Perhaps the creativity of his midfield partner rubbed off on the Scotland captain as he continued to probe in the first half. Helped Scholes to control the midfield in the second with an all-action display.
Matchwinner with a clever header in the first and a predatory finish in the second, making amends for missing a sitter with the score at 1-0. Wasted the chance to tee up Berbatov for a tap-in but miscued what should have been a routine touch into space. Caused Faye trouble throughout.
Didn't display the sort of form that has seen him earn high praise in recent months, but showed customary confidence on the ball and put in a classy cross for Hernandez that the Mexican should have turned in.
His pace was utilised to devastating effect on the break, but failed to find a telling ball. A thorn in the side of Collins, who saw yellow for a rash challenge on the Portuguese winger. Forced a smart save from Sorensen late on with a clipped effort from outside the box.
- 1 A. Begović
Came on to face his former club, replacing the ineffective Collins. Steady but unspectacular.
- 6 G. Whelan
Former Chelsea man came on with just over 10 minutes remaining and struggled to get into the game.
A rare appearance, much to the delight of the home fans, and rewarded his manager's faith with a truly sensational equaliser.
