Premier League Player Ratings: West Ham United 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

By Chris Davie

  • Robert Green

    3.50

    Robert Green

Pulled off a magnificent save from Modric in the first half. Following his error against Chelsea two weeks ago, the England international needs a run of self-assured displays to fully convince the West Ham faithful.

  • Lars Jacobsen
    24

    3.50

    Lars Jacobsen

Has looked confident following his arrival at Upton Park and he has settled in well to his new surroundings. Another solid and confident defensive display from the right-back should see him become West Ham’s number-one choice in that position.

  • Manuel Da Costa Trindade

    Manuel Da Costa Trindade

Defended well and looked assured at left-back. He had trouble with Aaron Lennon early on but following the winger's departure in the second half, he became more confident in keeping Spurs at bay.

  • Matthew Upson

    3.00

    Matthew Upson

A confident display from someone who has been prone to errors over the last few weeks. This will encourage Avram Grant and West Ham fans. The threat of Peter Crocuh was subdued and the Spurs striker had little chances against his fellow England team-mate.

  • Danny Gabbidon

    3.00

    Danny Gabbidon

Forged an excellent partnership alongside Upson and together they kept the Spurs attack restricted mainly to long shots from Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart. This could be the centre-back choice Avram Grant has been searching for.

  • Kieron Dyer
    16
    3
    3.00

    Kieron Dyer

Showed glimpses of his former self in the first half before being substituted after picking up an injury.

  • Scott Parker
    21
    2
    3.00

    Scott Parker

Showed early dynamism in midfield and West Ham are likely to be reliant on him again this season. Helped his team in both attacking and defensive departments. He needs to stay fit this season, as West Ham will find it difficult to replace him.

  • Mark Noble
    18
    2
    3.00

    Mark Noble

Worked well with Scott Parker in the middle and showed plenty of attacking drive. At times he was unable to cope with the guile of Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart but even so, the West Ham midfielder was the architect for most of West Ham’s attacks and he set up Frederic Piquionne’s goal with an excellent corner.

  • Boa Morte
    14
    5
    2.50

    Boa Morte

Faded as the game progressed and was overshadowed by the tenacity of Victor Obinna, who seemed contantly able to create his own chances without the need for a winger.

  • Victor Nsofor Obinna
    47
    6
    4.00

Victor Nsofor Obinna Top of the Match

Was West Ham’s brightest player yet again. Not only his work-rate makes him an early favourite with the Upton Park faithful, but his movement on off the ball is clever. When in possession the striker rarely wastes chances and he managed to test Carlo Cudicini on several occasions.

  • Frédéric Piquionne
    28
    0
    3.50

    Frédéric Piquionne

His first goal for the club with a tremendous header from a corner from Noble. The Frenchman worked linked up well with Victor Obinna and the two seem to have cemented their place as the first-choice pairing.

    Radoslav Kovac

Came on late on and had little influence on proceedings.

  • Pablo Edson Barrera

    Pablo Edson Barrera

Looked bright when coming on and showed excellent craft in his dribbling. He appears to be an astute signing by Avram Grant.

  • Carlton Cole

    3.00

    Carlton Cole

Did not look as bright as the man he replaced, Frederic Piquionne. He may struggle in the short-term to get starts in the league, given the form of Victor Obinna and Piquionne.

  • Carlo Cudicini
    32
    11
    4.00

    Carlo Cudicini

Made an assured claim from a corner early on but could do nothing for West Ham’s goal. He has proved a reliable deputy for first-choice goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. Pulled off two excellent stops from Victor Obinna and Mark Noble in the second half.

  • Alan Hutton
    19
    15
    3.00

    Alan Hutton

Made an excellent block in the second half to stop West Ham going two goals ahead. He defended well at right-back but he would have liked to have got forward more, but the threat of Victor Obinna restricted his attacking movements.

  • Vedran Corluka
    18
    18
    3.00

    Vedran Corluka

Struggled to keep tabs on Victor Obinna who ran riot against the Spurs back line. The lack of a protecting midfielder exposed the two centre-backs at times. And when Harry Redknapp pushed both full-backs on in search of an equaliser, the Spurs defence looked even more threadbare.

  • S. Bassong
    7
    20
    3.00

    S. Bassong

Had a busy afternoon keeping track of Frederic Piquionne and Victor Obinna. Coped well in the air and managed to stifle the onrush of West Ham midfielders.

  • Gareth Bale
    19
    12
    3.00

    Gareth Bale

Had little to do defensively but as per usual, the Wales international got forward and helped the attack well.

  • Aaron Lennon
    7
    22
    3.00

    Aaron Lennon

Looked bright in the opening half with a series of probing dribbles but faded slightly in the second 45. The winger’s crossing and end product has improved dramatically each season. Providing he stays fit, he has the potential to assist the majority of Spurs’ goals this term.

  • Tom Huddlestone
    7
    28
    3.00

    Tom Huddlestone

Squandered Spurs’s best opportunity of the game after being put through one-on-one against Rob Green. The midfielder made a hash of rounding the goalkeeper and the chance was lost. His range of passing was typically sound and he looks to have cemented his place in Harry Redknapp’s midfield.

  • Jermaine Jenas
    12
    25
    2.50

    Jermaine Jenas

Apart from an inadvertent block against a goal-bound effort with his face, Jenas struggled to make any impact on the game

  • Luka Modric
    27
    9
    3.00

    Luka Modric

Had an excellent strike matched by a save from Rob Green. Similar to Van der Vaart, the Croatian kept finding space in which he could pull the strings for the visitors. Perhaps he and the Dutchman require a more stable holding midfielder to give them both full licence to attack.

  • Rafael van der Vaart
    43
    8
    3.50

    Rafael van der Vaart

Constantly found pockets of space and tested Rob Green on a number of occasions. He has quickly settled into midfield and he will work well alongside Modric.

  • Peter Crouch
    10
    24
    2.50

Peter Crouch Flop of the Match

Struggled to impose himself on the game, which will cast doubts whether he is able to lead the Spurs line effectively on his own. He offered little outlet for the Spurs midfield and the trio of Aaron Lennon, Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart created more chances and generally outshone the striker.

Substitutions

  • Giovani dos Santos
    28
    8
    3.00

    Giovani dos Santos

Offered a new lease of life but should have come on earlier in order to make more of a significant impact on the game. He did himself no harm in pressing for a first-team start.

  • Robbie Keane
    7
    21
    3.00

    Robbie Keane

Linked up with the midfield better than Peter Crouch, but West Ham’s defence was resolute and subsequently the Ireland international had little opportunity to test Rob Green.

  • Roman Pavlyuchenko
    16
    19
    3.00

    Roman Pavlyuchenko

Only had ten minutes to make an impact and failed to cause any significant problems for West Ham.
