Player Ratings: Chelsea 6-0 West Bromwich Albion

By Andy Brassell

    Petr Cech

Made an alert save from Dorrans' deflected 10th min shot, but otherwise a quiet easing-in to the Premier League season

  • Alex
    296
    48
    0.00

    Alex

Sensible and aware display, albeit against a very limited attacking threat

  • Ashley Cole
    460

    Ashley Cole

A key outlet for Chelsea on the left, always in the game as a major attacking threat. Didn't neglect his defensive duties either.

  • Paulo Ferreira
    278
    149
    0.00

    Paulo Ferreira

Poor defensively in the first-half, given the run around by Thomas. Almost cost his team a goal early in the second period after carelessly losing the ball to Dorrans. Booked for a rash tackle.

  • John Terry
    282
    67

    John Terry

Solid and poised - showed again what an excellent understanding he has with partner Alex.

  • Frank Lampard
    291
    155
    0.00

    Frank Lampard

An injury doubt until the day of the game, the England man was below his normal level. Still chipped in with a typically controlled finish for number four.

  • John Obi Mikel

    John Obi Mikel

An assist for Malouda's opening goal, but a few bits of poor concentration and control ceded possession and pout his team in trouble

  • Michael Essien
    448
    33
    0.00

    Michael Essien

Still slowly coming back to his own formidable A-game, Essien was highly competent without quite hitting his energetic best.

  • Florent Malouda
    504
    30
    0.00

    Florent Malouda

Dream start to the season courtesy of a simple opening goal. Nominally on the left but drifted inside to great effect, and could have added to his tally before his smart finish for the sixth.

  • Didier Drogba
    772
    54

Didier Drogba Top of the Match

Started strongly, with his 5th minute strike too hot to handle for Carson. His first goal was well hit but owed much to a porous wall, the second an unfussy poacher's finish and the third firmly hit if deflected. Still a terrifying prospect for opposition defences.

  • Nicolas Anelka
    393
    105
    0.00

    Nicolas Anelka

A constant danger and - as always for Chelsea - defied his selfish image. Unbelievably hard-working, altruistic and always looking to create. His super reverse pass was key to creating Lampard's goal, and another great ball provided Malouda with number six.

    Branislav Ivanovic

Thomas got less change out of the tough Serb than he did Ferreira, even if the substitute came into the match in a comfortable situation

  • Yossi Benayoun

    Yossi Benayoun

Quiet introduction to life at Stamford Bridge with the game already won.

  • Salomon Kalou
    192
    42

    Salomon Kalou

Little chance to get involved - would have benefitted from an earlier introduction, though one suspects Drogba would have something to say about that.

  • Scott Carson
    87
    105

Scott Carson Flop of the Match

Horrible bit of handling on Drogba's free-kick gifted Chelsea their first goal. Did little wrong afterwards but the damage already done by his crucial error.

  • Gonzalo Jara
    23
    27
    0.00

    Gonzalo Jara

Positionally suspect - left acres of spaces behind him for Ashley Cole in particular to exploit. The Chilean will need to get over this ordeal quickly.

  • Gabriel Sebastian Tamaş
    28
    22
    0.00

    Gabriel Sebastian Tamaş

More adventurous of the two centre-backs, keen to bring the ball forward out of defence. Highly culpable with Blunt in allowing Drogba's first goal, his free-kick, to seep through the wall.

  • Pablo Ibáñez
    13
    25
    0.00

    Pablo Ibáñez

Gave away free-kick that led to opener with foul on Malouda, who was just too nimble for him. A dizzying Premier League debut for the former Atletico de Madrid man.

  • Marek Cech
    13
    22
    0.00

    Marek Cech

Had less to cope with than his colleague Jara, but still a tough afternoon for the Slovak.

  • Jerome Thomas
    21
    26
    0.00

    Jerome Thomas

Poised and balanced, gave Ferreira some worrying first-half moments, but delivery poor and infuriatingly reluctant to take the full-back on on the outside

  • Graham Dorrans
    51
    20
    0.00

    Graham Dorrans

The hub of all the Baggies' best moments. Calm and inventive in possession

  • James Morrison
    14
    20
    0.00

    James Morrison

Got the first shot of the match off in the opening minutes but his attacking contribution was strictly limited after - he had his hands full helping out the besieged Jara.

  • Youssouf Mulumbu
    20
    20
    0.00

    Youssouf Mulumbu

Struggled to contain Chelsea's midfield and not as robust as Roberto Di Matteo would have hoped. Hopefully a learning experience for the youngster.

  • Chris Brunt
    18
    19
    0.00

    Chris Brunt

Moved the ball well. Would have been interesting to see what he could have added in a wider position, providing quality balls from the flank. Complicit, with Tamas, in the defensive wall farrago that allowed Drogba's first goal through.

  • Roman Bednar
    20
    24
    0.00

    Roman Bednar

Completely isolated alone up front. Had a fine 19th minute finish ruled out - correctly - for a narrow offside.

Substitutions

  • Giles Barnes

    20

    Giles Barnes

Only came on in the last ten minutes with the game gone, but almost created a consolation for Miller with one excellent right-wing cross.

  • Simon Cox
    13
    20
    0.00

    Simon Cox

Got little change out of Alex and Terry, though one decent shot wide.

  • Ishmael Miller
    19
    19
    0.00

    Ishmael Miller

One strong run ended with a great ball to release Cech, even if Brunt couldn't capitalise. Will hope to make an impression from the start next week.
